There is no doubt that thick grass will help in the prevention of crab grass, and weeds.
The last 2 years, I have had poor control in my lawn.
This year, I switched from Prowl, to generic Barricade. I applied it at the maximum rate, and only had complete control until mid July.

Now, it's hands and knees time again, pulling it out. And, when I get tired of that, I apply Roundup with a 1" chip brush. Great fun.
