Not all of the sap comes from my own trees. I had a little over 300 taps at home, mostly on red maples. Not as high sugar content in the sap. I work at Green Mountain College about a 1/2 mile from home and they let let me tap there. I had about 110 taps on some fantastic trees. Very high sugar content and lots of sap. About 1/2 my sap comes from those taps. The actor Sam Waterston, from Law and Order, gave the commencement address this year he was presented with some of our syrup!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Hopefully I'll find someone that got a picture of it.

( Sorry to budge in on the maple chat,
but i heard if you use a high nitrogen fertalizer and put it on
the stump, then cover the stump with a black plastic bag it will rot the stump very very fast. I have a few i am going to try that too in a month or so. I think i will drill holes in the stump, put the fert on, and then maby douse it in Kerosene and burn it out. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
anyone else ever do this. )

Yes you can buy potassium nitrate at a farm supply store. The directions are much like you posted. 3 one inch holes converging at the bottom, fill with powder. After arain has dissolved the powder, fill holes with Kero and light. Suppose to burn all the way to the roots. We just let the stump rot, and used sodium nitrate (saltpeter) instead.

I've had to take down about five huge box elder trees during the last six years, they sprout all types of regrowth from the stumps. After I have taken the tree down and the saw chain needs sharpening or replacing, I do an additional cut with the worn chain. I'll dig down around the stump to permit cutting it below ground level.and after rinsing away the loose dirt, I cut so the center of the stump is lower than the outer part, so water will pool inside. Using a one inch spade bit, I bore about a dozen holes in the stump, then fill them with the cheapest weed killing fertilizer I can find. Any rain will pool inside the stump and hasten the rotting process. After about a year, I can remove whatever has softened, using an axe, and rebore the holes if needed.

I've had good success at preventing regrowth by using a weed and brush killer sold at TSC (Tractor Supply Company) under the name of PRONTO.

2% Crossbow in oil sprayed on the lower stem of the plant for about 8" above the ground kills everything I have tried it on--cascara, cherry, blackberries, Scotch broom. Supposed to use vegetable oil, but I have heard rumor of people using diesel, but of course I wouldn't know anything about that...
