For warthogs I always go with the 375 H&H mag, just in case some other beast is out and about when I am.

I'll be in RSA in 3 weeks. I'm leaving the 375 H&H at home though and just taking the 300 Winnie.

I have a Marlin 357Mag lever action for a brush gun. {not a big fan of Marlin lever actions, but I got it for a song} Like others have said, the .243 is the best trade off for weight, recoil and power. I have one in a Savage bolt action that have served me well. I have a Savage bolt action in .270, as well as a Rossi single shot. But if I could only own one rifle, it would be a 30.06. You can do more with the load than just about any other caliber.

I still have tons of ammo in most loads from when I used to shoot a lot. The increase in ammo prices doesn't affect me unless I buy a gun in a size I don't have.

I have always liked the Savage 99 for a lever gun. Strong action, and uses pointy bullets. Browning BLR's that I have shot were nice too.
