Glass surface cook stove

We had one for close to 18 yrs. Had to replace it once as some idiot (ahem...me) dropped a glass spice container on it from above and it broke the top. Other than that it was nice. Not bad to clean, but a razor scraper helps a lot with boil over mess. Any Soft Scrub type product is good for cleaning it, and then buff it out with a clean paper towel if you are the shiny surface type (rarely for us). There is glass cleaner stuff you can buy too, but it is basically Soft Scrub for more $$. They have limitations. The main one is they really don't heat up fast. Not bad, but they are basically an electric element as far as performance goes. They also tell you cookware should be flat on the bottom, so no warped pans. Never heard big issues with cast iron, as long as you don't do stupid things like superheat a pan then put it on a cold section of the top. Stuff like that goes without saying. It is tough stuff, but nothing is impervious. If you have a burr in your cast iron, 15 seconds with a file or some sandpaper should fix that and then no risk of scratching the surface. My wife used a bunch of cast iron on ours. Never an issue. The slow heating was probably the biggest annoyance. This is our experience. FWIW

We've had one for several years.

It needs to be cleaned often, preferably after each use.

Weiman's active ingredient is phosphorus. Ceramabryte is citric acid. They both work the same if you spread it on and scrub. That is, not real well. But if you spread them out, let them work for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off, Weiman's works better.

The best stuff we found for glass top cleaning has been "Bar Keepers Friend" cleaning powder. Use it dry, only need a small amount, rub using a folded paper towel and it will buff off any dark, burned on, material. Use just enough for use under finger tip pressure. It will not scratch. Once the stains are gone, finish up by dampening the paper towel and wiping up any residual powder.

Our KitchenAid glass top stove is supposedly a 1999 model (according to the serial number). It was in this house when we bought it in 2005. And like Dave, above, some idiot dropped a heavy glass 2 cup measuring cup on it and broke it in 2009 (yeah, me, too). And we never use our cast iron cookware on it; only use cast iron if it's on an LPG burner instead of the kitchen stove.

Ours has only been in since last fall, but so far using enameled cast iron dutch ovens has not been a problem...

I should try the Wiemans. Been using nothing but 409 and a scratchy pad. Pad doesn't scratch the surface but it does take off the burned and other stuff with elbow grease. As others, clean it often, if you wait it will be more work.

We had one for over 10 years. My wife and I hated it. Some idiot (not saying either me or someone else) dropped something heavy on the edge and started a hairline crack. Which eventually turned into a full blown falling apart of the top glass surface.

We did not like cooking on it. Gas is best, but an old style coiled electric is far superior to cook on than glass IMO. If you have a boil over on the glass while frying with oil, the glass stays so hot even though you turn it off, it will ignite the oil.

Ours is nearly 15 years old and the new models in the shops are exactly the same. I am over ceramic and looking at Induction now it has come down in price. Lots of different options and your cast iron will work on it OK. No need to spend zillions of dollars on cookware as some claim.
Safety is the issue for me now and the induction cooktops are the safest by far. Also as fast as gas and heat adjusts instantly either way. The glass stays cool to the touch so you are unlikely to suffer a burn, unlike ceramic or gas.
We already picked up a set of cookware on special at Aldi. 3 pots and a pan for $29.95 from memory. They are in storage waiting.... Some places charge more than that for 1 pot.

Had to buy a new one a couple of weeks ago. The old one started keeping the oven element on...even when the knob was turned off and burned the element up. My wife told me she smelled something (not me this time.) and I looked inside the stove and the element was glowing hot and the temp knob was off. I turned the breaker off. I looked online and the best advice was that the control board was shot. That part is quite expensive and it would need a new element too. I opted for a new glass top and picked one up the next day. The red head likes the smooth top so she got another one to play with...courtesy of my bank account..
