Just bought a new 7040:jump:. It's absolutely awesome. It's 24* farenheit this morning and the glow plug light on the dash turned on for like a half-second. Took a couple seconds to turn over and start. Is this normal? Every other diesel I've had would have the glow plug relay light up for like 10-30 seconds and then shut down. Yesterday at the dealer it and another 7040 didn't have the glow plug relay come on at all but it wasn't very cold. Do I need to call the dealer? Right now I have to hop on my warmed up tractor and get to "work."

I don't know where you are located or what the temperature is there. My tractor is a different brand but when it's warm my glow plug light doesn't come on.

I have a new M7040 with 35 hrs on it and it acts like yours.
It has to be seriously cold for the glow plug light to stay on for 10 seconds

If it gets cold enough it will stay on longer. Not saying you should do it, but sometimes I find myself turning the switch off and back on again wanting the glow plug to heat more. Have 1875 hours on mine.

Don't forget to look at the warm up time chart on page 14 in the owner's manual. The engine will start quickly but the transmission needs 10 to 20 minutes of idling before you should use the tractor depending upon outside temp.

Someone mentioned a new trick recently on TBN: repeating the glow plug heating cycle a few times with the ignition switch before cranking on cold mornings makes a big difference. After more than 10 years of simply turning it on once and cranking, I find this does produce a much quicker start. Mine never cranks more than a couple of seconds no matter how cold it is, but after repeating the heat cycle about 3 times, it starts instantly.

A couple of weeks ago it was minus 26f and I had to wait about 10 sec for the light to go out. Only did it once, then it cranked for about 5 secs and started. Rattled alot, but it started. I do hit the glow plug about 3 times on my ford truck when it gets down around 0. Seems to help alot.
