Will a bad glow plug relay stop the starter from engaging? The light for the glow plugs is coming on and then when it shuts off, the relay make a weird vibrating noise for about 1 second.

I have 12v at the battery.

What tractor is it? On my L5240 I can start it up without waiting for the glow plugs.

Thanks It is a L4310HSTC. 2003
I pulled it into the shop to replace a steering hyd line to the cylinder and now it wont start. It has been turning over slowly for the last couple of months, but it is winter here and I attributed that to the -25 weather. I found a slightly cracked wire from the fuse (near the starter) to the starter.
When I try to turn it over, the glow plug relay makes a weird noise for 1 second. Kind of buzzing. This is when the glow plug light shuts off.
I unplugged the large power wires on the glow plug relay and the relay works great. When I re-plug the wires in, the dash light get dimmer and the buzzing happens again.
On turning the key further, there is no starter movement at all.

I tried to jumper the starter at the 2 terminals on the starter and it does not move. I pulled the starter and it engages and spins properly on the bench. I now think this is the slightly broken wire.....but not sure.
The next test is to jumper directly from the battery while on the machine.

I also thought the glow plugs would be independent from the starter circuit, but now I have starter and glow plug issues. Sound like a power issue. I grinded the ground strap connection but that did not help.
Should I be looking at replacing all positive wiring from battery .......>?? Why would the glow plugs be giving me issues./?
Thanks again....

Not sure on the Grand L 10 series but on my 30 series there is a fuse box near the front by the battery sounds like you are not getting power to everything with the chattering sound from the relay there is something dropping out from low voltage. Check battery for capacity also it may be shot.

If the battery is not bad You have a bad voltage drop across a bad connection ... it can be on the positive supply side or the grounding side.
First place to check is the Battery... Check how many Volts are At the battery WHILE trying to start it.

The chattering relay & the starting problem are likely Both due to not having 12 volts While having a Load... Voltage drop will cause the relay to cycle on & off rapidly. If the GP controller was bad the GP relay would Not cycle on off...

I agree, dead or defective battery.
Charge up the battery or boost it and see what happens.

Well with respect I have to say that is not at all true.

The chattering relay could be due to the battery condition. But if it persists after the starting problem is solved it is most likely the glow plug controler. This is a common problem.

You can still have 12 volts at the battery, but no amperage if the battery is bad.
As suggested, jump it, or try another battery.

You are correct....
But with Both conditions occurring at the Same time, It is Most likely going to be the current flow to the relay Or to the starter is Not enough to allow either one to operate... In any case it is a very easy test to determine where the voltage drop is... When there is not enough current to hold any relay closed it will chirp...
The Glow Plug controller applies a ground to the relay from the timer circuits in it... if he suspects that to be a problem, a simple check at the relay coil should show 12 volts on one side and a ground on the other side of the Glow Plug Relay, ground Only present While glow plug indicator is lit... I doubt he will have to check that though, with the starter Also not operating he is having a problem getting enough current to the places that require good current flow...
