Glow plugs on 2210

How does one engage the glow plugs on a 2210 for cold starting?? It seems as though the owners manual does not address this issue. Thanks, Don

This topic has been discussed many times at TBN,
it's a simple system, but you are right, not covered in OP manual.

The system only works while the key is in the "crank" position. So, in order to get a preheat, you need to either move the shifter lever into gear, or turn the pto switch on, and then turn the key to crank. The engine won't turn over, but the preheat will work. AFter a few seconds, switch whatever switch you used to cancel the starter engagement back to it's normal position and start the tractor, with less cranking and less smoke. Easy as Pie!

Lots of posts, and apparently all the newer JD tractors are the same on this.

What I do is turn the key all the way to start with the shift selector in "H" (simply because it's up and more out of the way when I'm climbing into the seat), count to 5 (when cold, only about 2 when hot) and move the selector to "N" while holding the key still in "start" position.

The glow plugs will glow when you turn the key to between "on" and "start", but it's tricky to find exactly this position without actually working the starter. You can see how this works by connecting a test light between a battery power source and one of the glow plugs. JD should have installed such a test light on the dash board.

Interesting. I wonder if a permanently installed ammeter or volt meter would show the "bump" when the plugs engage?

I've seen on my 2210 that it's fairly easy to see when the glow plugs are engaged. Just watch your indicator lights on the dashboard. The lights will dim when your glow plugs are engaged. You will hear a click and the lights get brighter when the glow plugs go out....

You could easily install a permanent glow indicator. Just connect a wire to one glow plug, run to a tiny neon or LCD light and then to ground. That would take up less space than an ammeter. Of course, an ammeter might be more useful for other things.

I've never heard a click on my 4010. Think only those with good hearing would do so. Also, I almost always have ear plugs in my ears because I protect them. Have had stapendectomies on both ears.

I've still that alligator clip onto a glow plug. The wiring is in there held in place around the air horn (think that's what it is). All I need is a test light plugged into the other end and grounded to see if the glow plugs are on.
