I have been trying to get a clear answer on what type of oil this is. Is it an additive? Supposedly, it is recommended for all GM vehicles 2011 and newer but it is not listed in my owner's manual. I can't seem to find it in my local auto parts stores (Autozone and Bumper to Bumper).

A couple of the Dexos specifications consist of a hydro-cracked high viscosity index petroleum stock and PAO synthetics. It requires a liquified moly as part of its friction package.

The reason you're having trouble finding anything is what GM is trying to do has been tied up in litigation. GM created the "Dexos" name and is wanting to require any manufacturing company claiming "Meets Dexos Specifications" pay GM a royalty for every quart sold similar to the European industry.

Several small manufacturers and a few associations initially filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. I haven't heard how far those hearings have progressed but its approaching two years now.

With this business manuever GM is trying to control the competition so they can charge whatever they want. An easy way for you to see what impact this can have on your bottom line is research how much a quart of Castrol or Mobil 1 cost in Europe. The internet makes that fairly simple. Don't forget to convert to American dollars.
