Hey all. Been around the forum via Google but now a member. Looked around for some general buying advice but didn't see it. I'll keep looking, but any links would be appreciated.

Looking for an inexpensive compact utility for loader, blade, firewood and snowblower work. 100-200 hrs a year, likely even less. Going to check out this one:
M4950DTscreen2.pngM4950DTscreen1.png

Curious if you see and interpret what I do ...

4 speeds x 4 ranges, synchronized I believe, plus MFWD, should make for a good blower tractor? MFWD advantage is obvious, but I also like the slow reverse gears. I usually clear my long drive with a blade but would like to add a blower for grinding through big drifts and for shooting banks away so it doesn't redrift. 3 pt. seems plenty capable of any appropriate-size blower for this tractor, i.e. 6-7 feet, two stage? Saw a video of this tractor moving round bales on the 3 pt, and loader can counterweight a bit.

Adding loader when I can ... I believe I read that I can tie into a block under right foot pan? So as not to use up rear remotes? Suspect I should use a loader that goes all the way to rear axle?

Condition issues I see in the pix:
- Looks like TWO ether cans in the toolbox. Overdone laziness on starting the thing, so maybe ring, gasket, bearing damage inside? Candidate for a rebuild at 3580 hrs (or 13,580 :) ) if tach is true? Any hints on what to look/listen for? Didn't fine specifics on the s2800A engine here yet but I'll search for threads on other models that share it.
- Rust all over ... fenders horrible, speckles and splotches on other sheet metal, and on odd spots like 3 pt, even on PTO. The stuff on those more solid castings seems superficial. Did it maybe do a bunch of salty road time, or maybe work as a salt loader? Rust bubbles inside RR wheel ... did it spend a long time sitting in one spot? Such conditions can be an indirect clue for previous work and upkeep, but should such rust on exterior cause any direct worries for internals?
- Missing nose, therefore lights, one wonders why.
- Tires shot, but I'd limp along on them until I get the blower and loader bought. Little ding on front wheel.
- Rust around rear valve stem = CaCl in wheel causing corrosion? Not too worried, that's a fixable problem.
- Any guesses whazzup with that stick in that little access panel on the back?
- Any other catches other than it seems to have been rode hard and put away wet, perhaps underwater? :)

Price:
- Asking price with it in the condition shown was $3800. Now it is being painted, and I presume getting some new tin. New asking price expected to be $5400. Unfortunate that money is going into making it pretty when I don't care much and could have had a buffer for reliability. Still seems low for a Kubota. Suspiciously low? Given my low hours of use, how would you gauge my level of risk? Yeah I know, not much to be said on just two photos. But what I'm asking is ... if it drives, shifts, brakes OK right now, do you suppose any problems are likely to be ones that slowly degenerate, which I can live with, or are catastrophic failures to be considered.

ok heres something to think about you have $5400 in it after they paint it an do a few minor things to it.then add the loader for say $5000 that puts you at $10,500.an thats not counting any other un forseen costs.so if it was me id rather pay that $10,500 down on a new tractor.then you know what you have will last a few years without major probs.

A good thought but yikes, $5K on a loader!? I'm not going to put a new one on it. More like this, asking $500.

Figuring $1500 for a used blower and get the dealer under $5K on this tractor, plus $1500 on tires (eventually, not now), I'm into the tractor around $8500. Anybody who can point me at an $8500 45 hp MFWD with loader and snowblower, please do.

Your point about putting money down on something newer and more dependable has its merits. Are we talking about something like a new MX4700DT or MX5100DT in the $22-23K range? I can't have payments on this tractor. Each time the household financial officer made that payment and the tractor hadn't been used much, I'd pay in other ways. :D Just paid off my car last week; new payments have to wait until I can kill my old truck and "need" to replace it.

yes a mx5100 DT would be a real good choice.an you can find used mx4700 an 5100s worth the money.at about $15000 to $18,000 used.an $25,000 new or less.

I'm usually a fan of the early Kubota "beefy" machines. The M4950 was a great tractor in its day - although comparatively few of them were sold. Kubota was new to the U.S. market and was slow getting farmers to buy something new. Luckily they were nicely made and gave reliable service. But when they get over 3000 hours there are usually some signs of wear - like the piston rings, hydraulic pumps (steering and 3-point hitch). One good test would be to hook up a heavy 3-point implement and see how easily it lifts it. Something in the 1600 lb range like a 7ft heavy duty rotary cutter. If it struggles under real load, best to pass on it. Too many places where it could soak up a fortune. After 30 years outside sheet metal gets pretty thin. But the fact that it was just taken (or knocked) off and not replaced is an indicator of a tough life. A loader for a M4950 could be spendy. The $500 loader in the pic looks too small to reach over the front tires. I'd look for a used loader in the 2000 lb class and get a price from a welding shop on making the mounting brackets. Then see if it still looks like an attractive project.

Thanks for the great info! I agree that it looks like it had a rough life. Wish the dealer had invested money into guts instead of pretty. Letting this one go elsewhere.

Bought a Massey 135 with 3f/1r trans x Hi/Lo and MultiPower today, with a Freeman industrial loader with separate front pump. The low reverse seems plenty slow for a 6 ft. blower.
