I got a new club car and it came with a "Power Drive 3" charger. This charger is loud when charging. Its a loud hum, gets pretty hot and was burning off the newness I guess because it smelled hot. I'm new to the golf cart world, Is this normal for the charger? I'm more concerned with the noise. Dealer told me the its normal for it to get pretty warm but didn't mention noise.

I have a couple of golf cart chargers... both just have a low pitch hum. Not loud at all. Neither smell hot, nor feel hot.

Was there any Styrofoam packing inside the charger that you might need to remove? You might want to go ahead and request and exchange before you put too many hours on it.

No, no packing material to remove. Plugged it again last night, a lot of the noise comes from the metal encasing. When I press on various areas of box it dampens the sound. Still a loud charger if you ask me. I wouldn't want to be working in the garage listening to this hum all day.

Take it back and get one that sounds like a minor hum. Make sure you get the proper one for the voltage of your cart. My EZ-GO charger is just a quiet hum to let you know its working. Supply current is 5 amps or so at the start and goes to zero after about a day. 48 volts.

The hum is the transformer running and if the transformer mounts are too loose, too tight or rubbing against something it will be much louder. Possibly a defective transformer could be too loud also.

When you first charge your batteries or if they are very low, the charger has to run a long time to charge them and it will get pretty warm.
