Hi All,

I'm looking at buying a newer, larger tractor for haying this year. I currently have a good NH dealer and will be looking at the TN series, probably the TN75. Given that I bought my TC40D new last year, I'm thinking of buying something a bit used, say in the last 5 years or so. (I may also try to trade my TC in for the TN but I hate to do that.)

My dealer has very few used tractors and so I'm looking at all dealers in the surrounding 150 mile radius. When looking I've noticed that there seems to be a lot more JD versus NH. So, my questions is, what is a good 50-70 PTO HP JD that is comparable to the NH TN series. Other good brand ideas are welcome as well.

Thanks,

You would do well to come back here with the model numbers that you find. There might be good reasons for those tractors to be out there as that late of models used. They have been playing with a lot of different companies to built there tractors with Zetor being one of the better off makes they use.

That 5x20 series is awful nice. Lots of creature comforts in the cab. Are you looking for cab, no cab, 4wd, 2wd. I would stay away from the 10 series cab. The tractor was very good but that cab is nothing compared to the 20 series cab.

Yeah, it looks like a 5420 is just what I'm looking for. I would prefer 4wd and a cab. The 5420 has 65 PTO HP and the 5320 55 PTO HP, right?

Thanks,

Those tractors are a bit light in the rear from customer reports and by our trade-ins that we have had. I haven't heard to much on repairs about them and I don't know who is building that particular chassis for them.

Yes you are right on the specs. I ran a 567 round baler and a 338 square baler with a rack on the back on a 5420 and it was not light at all. This was up and down in hills too. My problem was with the cab I was too light on hp for that 567. It would get a little hot going up the hills. On the flats it was no problem at all and with the 338 square baler it was just fine hills and flats. With the cab you will lose about 10% of your hp when running ac and all. I could have gone to a 5520 and probably been fine but the dealer had a 6415 sitting on the lot so he took mine back and I got that one.

I think Yanmar is building the Trans/Differential, it's shiped to the US, Georgia I think, then assembled with a JD engine and sheet metal.

The engine and transmission for the 5000 & 6000 series is built by John Deere. The engine on the 4000 series is by yanmar.

The cab on the older 5000 TEN series was ok on our 5310. Much better than no cab but comparing it to the 5320 the 5320 wins. It's just like the 6020 series cab. You gotta see it to believe it.

Hey Doc,

Are you sure about those 4000 engines being from JD? Do they not have Yanmar engines in them?
