Hello All,

I am considering purchasing a Ford 1700 that is listed for $3,000 obro. I don't know a lot about it yet but wanted to see what the general feeling was concerning price. It is 4wd but the seller states that there is an issue with the 4wd, not sure yet what that entails and I know parts will be hard to come by. It is missing the front grill and headlights. Front tires look good but the rears will definitely need to be replaced. I will be calling the seller this evening to get more details. I know these tractors are very durable and from what I have read, they seem very capable. Was hoping to get an idea of what I should pay before talking with the seller this evening. Any help would be appreciated. Pics are attached. Thanks.

Hi. Welcome.

That tractor was last built in 1982. It has a 25hp engine. Tire condition should be a consideration. They will not be cheap.
It looks like it was not physically abused. Run test it completely. Look at the color of the fluids. Ask if service records are available.

Any attachments available?

davesl,

Thanks for the reply. The tractor will meet my needs, the biggest thing I plan to pull is a 4ft tiller. It does not come with any attachments. What do you think the chances are of finding parts for the 4wd system? Still not sure what the issue is, could be something very simple. What do you think as far as asking price?

I don’t see any offered around here, but if it were me that would be a little high without knowing what’s going on with the 4wd. Tires alone are going to push $1k to have them mounted and filled. Parts should be readily available, but they aren’t likely to be cheap.

Ford 1700 is a great tractor. I own one that was purchased by my dad in the mid-1980's. Great machine all these years. The particular tractor you are looking at looks to have been used roughly. Rear tires need replaced. 3 pt hitch has some non-stock parts that might affect operation. Grille and hood are ruined. Looks like all the gray parts have been rattle canned. ROPS is a plus - hard to find. No front or rear weights. No 4wd. I would be surprised if the electrical system functions as intended. Obviously, no headlights.

Bottom line - a Ford 1700 in great shape is worth around 5 grand with under 2,000 hours. This Ford is in poor shape with non-functioning 4wd. If runs without smoking and the hour meter works, I would go 1500 to 2000 maximum on it. That is with less than 2000 hours. If you really want a 4wd tractor (and I wouldn't own a 2wd), I would hold out for something better.

Check with your local New Holland dealer for parts. He will likely have some idea of the likely failure parts.

Good luck.

You can buy TWO 13.6 x 24 R-1 tires right now on E-bay for $601 delivered E-Bay item # 311344135532
You can buy TWO 11.2 x 24 R-1 tires right now on E-bay for $455 delivered E-Bay item # 231495135684
I assume 13.6 x 24 tires are what that tractor has now, and I do not know if 11.2 x 24 is even an option.
Mounting will likely cost you $30+ each.
Depending on your use for the tractor you MAY not need the tires filled.
The cheapest fill is DIY with -20F windshield washer fluid. You can buy a tire fill fitting at TSC for $10.
Do not use CaCl, it is horribly corrosive.
Do not use ethylene glycol, it is deadly to animals.
RimGuard (beet juice) is the best, but it is VERY expensive!

Okay….
Like I said, if he needs the tires mounted/filled/ etc… all from the local tire shop, it’ll be pushing $1k. Considering how he doesn’t have a tractor, what are the odds he wants to man handle two rear tires, especially if they’re filled? Don’t see the need to blow smoke about how cheap the tires COULD be for people with the equipment to handle them.

Any idea how many hours on it?
Among MANY other things, it could easily be needing a new clutch soon.
About $800 if you do it yourself, and with aftermarket parts.
It might be suitable as a spare parts tractor!
My thought would be to PASS, and keep looking!

I am sure I am a LOT older than the OP.
I took my old mounted tires to a shop, had the new tires mounted, and brought them home in the back of my pickup.
I rolled the tires up to my tractor, and bolted the wheels on.
Then I attached my TSC fill fitting, and filled everything up.
Didn't "blow smoke", or even break out in a sweat.
It was easy!
