Good deal?

Just picked up my first "real" tractor (always have had Gravelys). It's a 2001 bx1800 with 300 hrs, one owner, a 54"mmm, an FEL and a large dump cart. I bought it from an older gentleman who seemed very meticulous about maintenance and even made me promise to take good care of it for him! I picked it up for $5500. According to the dealership, they would sell that same tractor for 9-10k. Seem like a good deal?

Sounds like a decent deal. I would check fluid levels, especially the front diff. This is often overlooked. Throttle up and enjoy!

If a "dealer" told me they could get close to 10k for it.I would call their bluff and tell them to give me 9k as trade in towards a new larger model.Thats just me, that size tractor seems to meet your needs and then some.

Congratulations!!!

If it were taken care of well, you did very, very well on it.
Perhaps the comment about 10K is what it would cost today new, or what it would cost to replace with a new BX1860. In that case, yes, that cost would indeed be 10K and a bit more.

300 hours averages about 40-45 hours of use a year. Reasonable use.

I would look at it this way:
If you were just looking for a lawn mower that compares in cutting capacity to the BX1800 you would probably have to spend $3000 or more. Considering that what you have is a good bit more then a lawnmower I think you did very well.

Thanks to all for the words of encouragement. I had never seen one so inexpensive and wasn't really in the market but figured worse case scenario if I didn't like it I could always get my money back (and probably some extra!). I will say that my wife claims she hasn't seen me smile this much in a long time! It's pretty hard to not enjoy the darn thing....

Word of advice:You might not want to teach her how to operate it (tractor),or you could end up like a friend of mine did here on TBN wearing"an apron". :laughing:

I would never teach her how to operate it! I probably shouldn't say this but her aunt told me she enjoys driving their b7500 because her husband rides up in the bucket to clean out the gutters.(totally against all safety precautions, I know) She said she enjoyed having the upper hand and "shaking him around a little bit". I told her I would get no where near the tractor let alone the bucket if my wife was attempting to operate it.
On another note, if there was anyone in this house wearing an apron it would probably be me. I do all the cooking as my wife burned down her parents' kitchen when she was 8 and her mother never taught her to cook after that. Trust me, it's for survival.
