Good dealers are worth the money.

I have a Stihl 028 Super Wood Boss that I bought new in 1990 (I think) and it has been a real good saw. Even better than the saw is the dealer. Several times I have brought it in after sitting around to long and they take it in the back and come back out and hand me the saw and say no charge. Today I brought it in because I could barely turn it over. I thought it was a lost cause. The service guy puts it up on the counter and takes the cover off and then goes to the back and I hear it running. He came back out and told me that my linkage was stuck down and give me a lecture about how to use it.... NO Charge! If this saw ever gives up the goast I will buy another from them without thinking twice.

The starter wasn't working right on an old "K" series Kohler and I took it off and went to the dealer with it. When energized, it turned fine and with power, but the Bendix wouldn't extend the starter gear out to the flywheel. I couldn't even pull it out. The dealer tried pulling it out with no success until he clapmped it in a vise and pried on it with two screw drivers, bending both screw drivers in the process, when the Bendix suddenly let loose. Starter worked fine in every way afterwards. He put a couple of drops of oil on the Bendix shaft and handed the starter back to me. I asked, "What do I owe ya?". He said, "Nothing, I've never seen one do that and I learned something today." It took probably 20 minutes of his time and at a shop rate of $45 an hour, that should have been a $15 bill plus the cost of 2 ruined screwdrivers, but he was happy that he figured something new out about these old starters. That's a guy I like doing business with, and I'm not alone, he has grown in business a lot over the 3 generations that have run the place.
