Went over to a friends place the other day. It had been a rental for a few years and there is a small creek, dry this time of the year, about 15' off the side of the house. In walking the place I asked what the piles and dams in the stream were. Turns out the tenant did some gold mining and took about $1500 in dust out of about an 80' section of the creek. The creek is about 8-10' across, 3-4' pretty vertical side walls and I figure I can get the 23 down in there and see what we can find. The tenant laid out his findings and mapped it out very well for Skip, so maybe we can have some fun with it if we can get a bit deeper.
Any time I get these thoughts I recall a story by another friend who grew up in the area. While in HS he and some friends figured a good place to dig in a stream. When school let out the diverted what little of the stream was still running and began digging. I, excitedly said, "How did you do?" He said, "well, we got down to about 20'." "Yeah, and what did you find?" Never one to let a story go to quickly, he said, "Well once we got down to 20' we found picks and shovels, so we figured it was a good time to stop."
