Just got off the phone with a guy selling a BL80A PHD with a 13" augar (according to his measurements) which he purchased new about15 years ago. Doesn't sound like it has seen a lot of use over this time. He tells me he used it for about 1 year after he purchased it to set some railroad ties as corner posts and then years later when he moved to a new place and had to fence in a small area for some critters. Long and short of it is that it has spent most of the past 15 years gathering dust in his barn. The only problem with it he says is that the seals dried up and it leaks - something that I imagine could be easily remedied with new seals which I believe I would be capable of replacing myself. His "firm" asking price is $350. I have little idea what a new one goes for. I'm just looking for something to attach to my Kubota B7500 to place 120 or so 6" fence posts in very soft east central IL soil. I had been looking at offerings on eBay (Leinbach L7200JR) and from the nearby Farm and Fleet (King Kutter), Rural King (Speeco Model 70), and TSC (County Line) and it would appear that I could get something new for $500-700+. I understand that the BL80A may sell for a lot more new but I suspect much of the higher price is for the Kubota name. I'm the last person to pass up a deal but the effort required to replace the seals and concern regarding other unknown/unrecognized problems would quickly balance the the savings. Is the BL80A so much superior, replacing the seals such a minor effort, and the chance of other unknown/unrecognized problems so unlikely that I should pounce on the used PHD rather than buying one of the new non-Kubota offerings I mentioned? Other questions I should ask or things I should be looking for on the used BL80A? Thanks.

That should be a great deal... The auger is a lot bigger than I would use to plant 6 inch posts... But you may find a great deal on a smaller auger bit... KennyV

Why not call the Kubota dealer and get a price for repairs, broken down to parts and labor?
That should give you an idea of how difficult the job is and much the parts cost. With that information you should have a better idea of where you stand on this "deal".
I have no idea but I would guess that the seals should only take an hour to replace if you have the right tools.
You may also think about how much you are going to use this device in the coming years and how much time you can devote to fixing it. You may find the King Cutter will be adequate if you're only going to use it a few hours a year. I think the Kubota unit will be of superior construction and have a much greater service life than the king cutter.
I would be reluctant to purchase this without seeing it and I would ask the seller if he will demonstrate the PHD so you can see just how bad the leak is. It may not even need to be replaced.
