Good third party shop manual for a 30 hp JD 790?

Does anyone know of a good third party shop manual for a 30 hp JD 790? If not, is there another, probably older, JD tractor manual that is similar enough to suffice?

keep your eye out on ebay. I picked up a factory manual for my New Holland for $30 including shipping. MSRP is $175. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

There is an 800 number you can call at Deere & they will tell you what manuals are for your machine. If I recall they were reasonably priced (for lawn equipment anyway)

I picked up the Maintenance CD-ROM for 670, 770 tractor (also includes the other x70 series tractors) for $48 through Deere. Just got it less then a month ago. It's on Adobe Acrobat Reader and is 1008 pages.

The 670 and 770 are the predecessors to the 790. Same sheet metal, transmission, etc.

Update: I just looked at my Maintenance CD. There's a fair amount of information on the 790 as well. It appears information applicable to the 790 are in addendums in the manual. Most other repair info is applicable to 670/770 and 790. Be advised there was a recent change in the engine used in the 790 series machine. If you bought a 2003 machine, an older manual may not be correct in regards to engine work.

If you are referring to something like a Chiltons repair manual for cars, I've not seen them for modern tractors. Plenty for the popular vintage machines though.

Like others have said, your best bet is either Deere or Ebay. I picked up all sorts of manuals for my 790 and 7 backhoe off Ebay (from another TBN member no less). As was mentioned, you do have to watch the relevancy. Typically, the manuals will cover all model variations up to the publication date. They have serial numbers covered listed. So a newer manual will cover your older model but probably not the reverse.

If you need something specific, I've got the parts catalogs for the 790, 70 loader and 7 backhoe as well as the basic owners manuals. I don't have the full up repair manuals /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
