Hi all,

Northern Tool has 2 of Forest-Master's bucking sawhorses on clearance.

The best deal is on their Saw Tree Horse, which normally listed there for $99.99, and is clearanced to $20.00.

The item number is 24840, and the catalog number is 1314.

It cost me another $19.90 for shipping to my upstate NY address.

It will handle a log up to 18" and #1000. It comes with all the chains necessary to hook up to any handy tree trunk, or it can be attached to a wall, trailer, or whatever you like

The other model is a free-standing model I think, with less of a discount.

Mine was ordered last night and is supposed to be here on Friday.

Work safe,
Thomas

Thomas,
I can't figure out the purpose of the silver do-hickey on the upper orange rung. There seems to be one included with the other model as well. Do you know what it's for?

Hiya Stuck,

They both come with a chain that you drape over the log, so the ends fall through the 2 opposed funnels, which have slots cut into the bottom of them.

When you push down on the bitter (short) end of the log, the chains slip down and tighten, then when you release it, the chains catch in the slots holding the log for cutting. You are supposed to have 1/3 overhanging that side of the horse, and 2/3's on the other side. The manual is available on the item page and says you should alternate cutting on each side to keep roughly that ratio.

I'd have bought 2 of them, but I'm still laid up and we're trying to be careful with the Benjamins...

Thanks for explaining, Thomas. I don't think I could buy the steel to build one for what they're asking. Good luck with it and I hope you're out and around soon.

No problem, I had to go through the manual a couple of times and watch a video to be sure that was the plan myownself.

I thought it was a pretty unbeatable deal too, plus how would you be sure you got the tolerances right so the teeth would hold, etc....

Thanks, hopefully I'll get a new knee put back in in mid-August and be back in trouble a few weeks later, give or take, GOD willing and the creek don't rise.

Be well,
Thomas

Well, if anyone is interested, the tool arrived today, and is very well made of heavy steel (actually made in the UK).

The package arrived sealed and only minimally dinged up, and there was some evidence of heavy handedness in the form of marred paint, but I plan to ding it up more...

Unfortunately, I do have to report that it was missing 3 vital components per my comparison of the parts to the parts list: a 1.8M length of chain to hold down the log, the backing plate for the chain stop/bracket, and 4 snap ooks/quick links.

I emailed both NT and FM and we'll see what happens from here.

Fit and finish are otherwise great.

Be well,
Thomas[/QUOTE]

I think I'll wait on the log holder until someone actually tries it.

It looks to me like the chain is too close to the dogs to successfully hold the log parallel to the ground. Too much torque involved unless the log is centered. It is on sale at a substantial discount for a reason.

Then the question becomes, how in heck do you get the log lifted into that position? A 1000 pound log - no way it can be done by hand. Whatever is used to lift the log might as well be used to hold it for cutting. I'm thinking forklift or a fabbed holder like in the photo below.

Hi GW,

You make good points, but for 20$ plus another $20 for shipping, I figured that even if I need to mod it out, I'm not out that much.
Our plan is to use loader w/ or w/o forks to place the logs, saving me both lifting and then bending repeatedly to saw it up, and freeing the tractor to move away to other pursuits, vs being a very expensive saw horse.

For an update on my parts status, I just heard back from Northern Tool, (sig less than 24 hours after my email was sent) saying that they have already sent me another complete unit, no return or any other documentation required.

Awesome service, especially since it was not at all their error, but the mfg's, from whom I have not yet heard back.

Now, for a short length of chain, 4 snap rings/quick links, and an easily made backer plate, I will have one horse to mount by my wood pile, and another to mount to my trailer or wood shed wall.

Thomas

PS: Your picture also reminded me that my truck crane and log tongs are another option to load the logs on the horse.

The torque on the chain stop is why I'm waiting to get that base plate fabbed and mounted before doing any bucking.

BTW, the chain stops are seriously HD as are the pieces that form the vee.
