I love Google Earth. Its just a toy for me but its lots of fun. I really like the measuring tools that allow you to trace a line or path and it will tell you the distance in any units you want.

What would be even more useful is for that same tool to allow you to make a shape using the path tool and then tell you the area enclosed by that shape in acres, sq feet, sg meters, etc.

Does anyone know it this is possible? Has anyone ever suggested it to Google?

Howdy George,

I do the function, (figuring up acres, etc), you are talking about occasionally using Delorme Street Atlas. But my favorite is Delorme Topo USA. I like to know the size of a particular piece of land or clearcut.

Zoom into your area of land, go into "Draw", "Polygons", and outline your area. The program will figure the area to the nearest hundredth of an acre.

The programs are fairly inexpensive.

I need to get that topo map software. It looks very handy. But, on Google Earth, it will give you measurements in much smaller increments, tens of feet, but I have no idea how accurate it is. But, if it can give you the linear distances it should be simple to add a function to calculate area...which I guess I could just do myself.

I wonder if any GPS units will give you an area of connected way points?

I've heard some rumors that Google Earth Plus or Pro may support polygon areas - you can give the trials a try to find out (although apparently a lot of features like this migrate from the Plus/Pro to the free version). I was also able to find GE-Path which may work - but I haven't tried it out myself.

What would be REALLY cool is after you've drawn out the polygon if you could download the corners as waypoints to a GPS. We've purchased some property that is all overgrown, so it's challenging to locate the markers.

Brian,

Yes, you can do all that using the Delorme Topo USA or Street Atlas. Just put your curser on any point on your screen and the Lat/Lon will be displayed on the bottom of the screen. Just enter them into your GPS. Or...if you have a laptop, with the Delorme GPS receiver, and using the software, you can walk/tractor/ATV around and see your position on the screen with the map. You can zoom in, etc.

Hook up an inverter to your tractor's 12v system and you can run your laptop off the tractor's power.
Pretty neat if you think about it.

With that knowledge, there's all kinds of other possibilities...you can drive around with the bush hog and create a corn maze for the kids, or a huge 20 acre peace sign, crop circles...in addition to just locating property boundries...

Google maps. That reminds me of something my daughter sent me, it was the instructions from New York to England or some such place overseas. After so many instructions of turn this way and that way on this street and that street, along about the 28th line of instructions it stated "swim atlantic ocean". Pretty funny.
