I really enjoy playing with google earth... Zooming in to spots around where I live, as well as places I have visited, etc. it's sort of like being able to fly your own airplane around the world! My question is about how often the views are updated, or if there is a way to get real time (or at least more current) data. I know the current view of my house is about three years old. If there is a better service, other than Google Earth, I would also be interested in knowing what it is.

Some versions have a slider that you can move back and forth to show pictures from different times. The slider has a date on it so you can see how a town looks 20-30 years ago. Really neat feature.

Our view updates every couple years it seems. Bing gives a different view, but it gets dated too.
NOAA view updates several times per day but the view is very distant. I've used it to watch for ice out on northern lakes.

Your municipality or township likely has a pretty recent aerial photo library of your property online. In the city of Ottawa for example, you can go back in time in 2~3 year blocks and see how things have changed. You can even overlay property lines, rights of way, water well info, etc.. Pretty interesting seeing what some of your neighbours have in their back acreage.

Our township has started that also. A local camp owner told me he was approached by the township to review the photos and discuss permits for any future development.

Our county GIS office has pretty good aerial photos online. They have even better photos available in the office.

I have used Google Earth many times to look at places I used to live. Kinda freaky to use Street View and see the house you used to live in really has not changed much.

Later,
Dan

You can sign up for email alerts when new imagery is added to locations that you're interested in. I did some time ago and it does work.

I use Flash Earth - Zoom into satellite and aerial imagery of the Earth in Flash I think the picture resolution is a lot better. I can see my tractor & rolls of hay sitting in the field.

Flash Earth may have better resolution, but in my area the image is at least three years older than Google Earth.

I see a cloud in Flash earth. Which is the same cloud in the new Bing view. I'll keep that bookmarked and Ill check for image updates.
With Bing I can zoom past this new cloud and see the old zoom of my place.
Bing used to be the most detailed image for me but I see that google is now using the same image.
