I am considering upgrading my 18ft 7K bumper pull to a 22ft 12K trailer because the 18ft is too short when the FEL and bush hog are attached to the JD 3320.

What are your thoughts on a 22ft 12k BP vs a gooseneck? I will be hauling approximately 6k in equipment and will be pulling with a 2500 diesel. Therefore, I should have plenty of truck. The truck is also equiped with a B&W gooseneck hitch.

Please tell me your experiences pulling the same weight and length BP vs the gooseneck.

Thanks

I have a BP 7000# for light work such as the B or BX.

The 14K goose is the way to go for heavier loads.

I had a 5th wheel so I have a pin post in place of the goos post.

I have a 20' BP and a 24' GN. I find the GN takes more space going around curves (have to swing wider) than the BP because the axles are located back further. Both tow equally well. For me it is easier to back up the BP since it will turn easier (for the opposite reason, axles are closer to tow vehicle). Backing the GN into tight places takes more steering wheel movement to get it turning where you want it to go.

A gooseneck will by far pull better than a BP

A GN will be safer since it will corner, brake and overall handle better.

A GN is easier on the truck and is easier to load properly (loading it just right is less critical)

A GN allows you higher tow capacity typically

A Gn rides MUCH better

The list goes on and on............

The only real downfall is that you lose the use of part of the truck bed and the trailer can't be used with other vehicles(since most have a bumper hitch but few will have a GN hitch)

the real question is are you going to ever want to put stuff in your bed when you are haulinging the trailer.

Maybe my dogs every now and then. I am just curious about the handling, weight distribution, etc of the gooseneck vs the BP is the length and weight capacity is the same for both trailers.

Here is my set up 14,000lb GN. The last load I had on it was about 3/4 cord of oak on the front of trailer and my 580CK (about 9500lb) with bucket on top of oak and saws and others things in the bed of truck. I would not be able to do this with the tag along set up I had before this (backhoe only). I also have the B&W and love it 30,000lb rated the receiver is a Putnum XDR and is rated at 16,000lb. That is a pretty big difference in the saftey factor for weight carrying. I almost bought a used 12,000lb GN I'm glad I went with the 14,000lb. That is what I would reccomend. Hope this info is what your looking for.

Handling : A big difference GN much better ride, need wider turns

Weight distribution: more of an issue with a tag along.

Capacity: Both 14,000lb rated. I would feel much safer with a fully loaded GN then a fully loaded Tag along.

I'll chime in here too. I have a 20+5 gn and have bumper pulls as well. I haul with a 250 diesel so plenty of truck. The GN is all the things other have said. You really don't lose much bed space, you can still put tools and the like on the bed without issue. It does ride much better. It's not as convient when hauling frequently as the bp (for me anyway). The B&W is the only way to go. Just make sure you lube it up and move it every now and then(especially if your in salt country like I am). It takes alittle getting use to in turns.

I have both GN and BPs. My big GN is 25K, 31' dual tandem axle. Previously had GN dump trailer. Rest of trailers are BPs including 14K, 24' electric tilt; 12K, 20' with HD mesh ramp; 14K ,16' dump and a few other small trailers. I just find the BPs more convenient because of other stuff I haul in the bed of the truck.

For really heavy loads, I prefer the GN. Otherwise I can balance the loads so the tongue weight isn't to much. Even a dump trailer can carry far over its load limit. I tend to load mostly over the trailer axles and can leave the front more open for the heavy loads and still be nearly overweight. It is very easy to have excessive tongue weight with a dump bumper pull if it is not loaded correctly.

Since the OP is hauling only 6K, the advantages to a GN are marginal. Long BPs such as the 22' the OP is considering pull very nicely. I believe it is due to the long wheel base of the longer trailers. I once had a 16' 10K trailer that was easy to get trailer sway unless the tongue weight was high with heavy loads. I have yet to have any sway with my 24', 14K bumper pull unless I have very light tongue weight due to load being too far back.

I think the resale of GN is more difficult because fewers buyers have hitches in the bed. Once asked local dealer if he sold more BPs or GNs in dump trailers. He surprised me when he said BPs dumps had much higher sales.
