I have had the best luck on western pocket gophers with these Victor black box traps.
I can't really use poison because of the dogs- even if they don't get into it, they will find and eat the victims.
The other most effective method has been my Marauder pistol.
This works well in the general vicinity of the house, and has accounted for several dozen this year. All the shots are head shots on these varmints, so no wounded critters... it's either an instant kill or a clean miss. It requires patience and precision. Hatred of the enemy is the best motivation.
To be honest, while killing approximately 100 gophers this year, I don't seem to have many less than when I started. But it makes me feel better and at least the ones around the house don't persist.
