I finally pulled the trigger on my tractor. I came home Friday night with a 2005 2910 with a whopping 12.9 hours on it. It came with a 5 rotary mower, a 6 box scrape and boom pole. It also has ag tires, but no FEL. I paid $8K for the whole deal, + about a 3 hour drive each way to pick it up.

I unloaded it Saturday morning, and began checking it over before putting it to use. I greased all the zerk fittings, checked tire pressure, checked engine oil, coolant, hydraulic oil, etc. Everything looked pretty good, so I mowed for about 3 hours on Sunday. Little beast works like a champ, but it is a little light in the front end. I was cleaning up a downed tree, and lost my steering because the front end came off the ground?o moved it though! I think a FEL or front weights are definitely in my future.

The only real complaint I have is the service manual. I know there was some little Korean guy tasked with writing it in English, but it is pretty lacking. I want to go ahead and change the oil, but the only thing I found was to use grade CC or better. Now, I am not a member of API, and am somewhat of a newbie to diesel engines, so can someone tell me what weight to use (10w-40, 20w-50, etc)? Also, where can I get filters without ordering from branson? I am sure there has to be a cross-reference somewhere.

Thanks for any help.

With that low hours it dosen't need the fluids changed until 50 hours.
I use Castrol 15w-40 I think it is a diesel blend, I get it at Walmart. You don't say where you are from, that could change things too.
As for the filters, there has been some discussion here about off brand and some report problems with the hydraulic filter. I have a 3510 and the filters from the dealer were $47. IIRC. To me that's reasonable considering the size of my investment. Besides I'm having such a good time with my tractor that I would be miserable if I save $10-20. and it damaged it.
I bought a BL-10 FEL last December and it was $3418. with tax. Well worth the money, I use it more often than I thought I would. It is easy to remove (2 pins 4 hoses) if you don't need it, like when mowing.

Matt,
check the TYM website - they have pdf copies of the Century manuals, which is sort of like the difference between Chevy & GMC with Branson -- and it specifies either 10-30 or 10-40 CC or CD motor oil. (near as I can figure, the "C" means deisel oil, where the Castrol I put in my pickup starts with "S" - as in SG)
WIX makes compatible oil & hydraulic filters -- the difference between them and factory is the size of the bypass valve - it's bigger in the OEM filters for cold weather starts - at least according to someone else here on TBN. I've also heard that with the WIX filters you need to replace them more frequently.

Until you get the loader, make yourself a front weight bracket to save on floating those front tires. But trust me - once you have a loader, you'll cuss yourself for every day you didn't have it!

You can always separate your rear brakes by lifting the latch bar (if you have one) and steer it with left/ right brake

Matt,
was at Wal-Mart the other day and Castrol actually lists SM/CI as an oil grade - which sounds diesel compatible. On the other hand, on the shelf was also Motorcraft Diesel Oil and Rotella Diesel oil, which I would tend to favor because they're not diesel COMPATIBLE gasoline oils.
Of course, I'm also pretty much a novice at the whole diesel thing, so I could be playing it too safe by sticking with the Rotella Synthetic.

Just my opnion, you can't go wrong with Rotella Synthetic. In fact, it is a cleaner oil, so if wanted you can use it in your gas car. I think as a whole we tend to over think the oil thing, how many early engine failures have you seen in the last ten years? many people use the generic stuff! What ever you choose to use, do change it on time!

Just my opinion! Bob
