I got my new pump for my backhoe today. It's a Haldex Barnes. It looks like this one http://thumbs3.ebaystatic.com/m/mdx5JGqUfGyaTCd7HNOmcQA/140.jpg But the thing is the ports are different from my other pump.

My other one had the ports on the side. This new one has one on the side and one on the bottom.

So I'm wondering if anyone knows which would be the suction port and which would be the discharge.

Also just to be sure. That arrow on the top is the direction the shaft is supposed to turn right?

I ask because I had my other pump reversed going counterclockwise when it should have been going clockwise and I blew the seal in it.

The other one didn't show an arrow. But this one does and it points to counterclockwise.

I'll try to get a pic up of the new pump as soon as I find my camera.

Thanks

Chad

If there are two ports, generally one is larger than the other and the larger one is the suction port.

Do you know what type of pump is it?

Thanks. I figured it out. It was the smaller "Bottom" port for the suction. The side port was for the discharge. I found that out because I hooked it up the other way around. Wasn't getting any fluid out the hose.

So I put my hand on the end of the hose and it was sucking. Switched the hoses around and this time got fluid coming out.

Hooked it back up and got it working again.

Are you sure you didn't have it plumbed correctly the first time but were turning it the wrong direction? I agree with Chris611 that the large port is usually the suction port. Some gear pumps have the front seal ported to the suction side, so if you run it backwards the seal will see full system pressure and blow out. (yes, I did it once)

I wasn't sure at first. But now after running it for an hour and a half each day for a few days. It hasn't blown the seal.

There's a little arrow next to the shaft pointing counter clockwise which is the way I have the pump spinning now.

So I'm confident I have it going the right direction with this pump. Otherwise I'm sure it would have blown out a few minutes after running it.

Since that's what happened to my other pump. I had it spinning the wrong direction and within a few minutes it blew the seal and fluid was spraying out everywhere.

It was a great used pump until then. I may repair it or just keep it for parts for my new one in case I need it.

Only gave $25.00 with shipping for the used one on ebay so not a big deal.

But this new one I paid $70.00 with shipping so hoping this one will last a awhile longer.

If I hadn't put the pump on backwards and blew the seal. I could have used the new pump money for the last hoses I needed. "The ones for the bucket cylinder". lol

Oh well. The hoses wouldn't do no good without the pump to pump fluid through.
