Of course you may ask! I really kicked it around, especially due to its light weight, but there were several reasons that I diverted. First of all, the loader arms on the Model 70 loader (used on my JD 790) are at a different width than the newer compact Deere tractors. This would mean that in order to be compatible, I'd have to build a quick attach system that would be offset from my loader arms. Besides, I was looking forward to building my own stuff so I did not anticipate ever using any commercially made attachments and if I did at some point run into a deal I couldn't turn down, I figured it wouldn't be to difficult to convert over to whatever I put together.
Secondly, I wanted to fab the complete project with steel that I had access to without any extra cost as would otherwise be required with the Hook and Pin kit available from Deere. Additionally, while I've not heard of any problems with the Deere hooks, I have heard and read of some problems with a few homemade hooks bending under load. I had some concern about my ability to work up a set of hooks that were both strong enough and similar enough to be properly functional. I had no such concerns about my abilities to fab up something using flat stock. (Yeah, I know, I'm a bit of a rookie.)
Anyway, what I worked up was really quite simple and it thankfully it really worked out quite well.
