Nice fabrication. You left yourself a very small "window" to hit on the bucket! :)

Yeah.
Actually, I've been out playing with it this morning and the aprox. 3/4 of an inch that I built in works just fine. In addition, the outside edges are canted out in order to help catch the loader arms and line up the bucket. So, its really not that difficult... I just approach it slowly and I've not had any problem hitting the "window." However, if I had to do over I'd probably go another inch or so just to make it even easier. Live and learn! :)

I only noticed because one of my SSQA attachments is kinda tight. Certainly not a huge deal.

Nice work.

May I ask why you didnt do the complete JD hook and pin system like their newer loaders? Youre half way there and that would have allowed you to find other attachements later on without needing any conversion to your system. They sell the bent hooks and pins ready to weld on as well.

Check out my signature below for the conversion I did to my old 70A loader. I went SSQA since I found a nice set of forks already.

Of course you may ask! I really kicked it around, especially due to its light weight, but there were several reasons that I diverted. First of all, the loader arms on the Model 70 loader (used on my JD 790) are at a different width than the newer compact Deere tractors. This would mean that in order to be compatible, I'd have to build a quick attach system that would be offset from my loader arms. Besides, I was looking forward to building my own stuff so I did not anticipate ever using any commercially made attachments and if I did at some point run into a deal I couldn't turn down, I figured it wouldn't be to difficult to convert over to whatever I put together.

Secondly, I wanted to fab the complete project with steel that I had access to without any extra cost as would otherwise be required with the Hook and Pin kit available from Deere. Additionally, while I've not heard of any problems with the Deere hooks, I have heard and read of some problems with a few homemade hooks bending under load. I had some concern about my ability to work up a set of hooks that were both strong enough and similar enough to be properly functional. I had no such concerns about my abilities to fab up something using flat stock. (Yeah, I know, I'm a bit of a rookie.)

Anyway, what I worked up was really quite simple and it thankfully it really worked out quite well.

I'd like to use most of your design for my project and have a few questions. How much wider is the socket than the adapters on the arms? I'm curious about ease of guiding into the socket versus having the pins seat into the hole and if there is any problem with too much slop when in use. I've seen pins securing the adapters on store bought units and assume they will take the weight of the front of the tractor lifting with the bucket. I assume a little slop here won't hurt either? How thick is the metal forming your bucket? Looking at mine I was thinking that it's too thin (1/8") without using some sort of ribs to strengthen the area where the pockets attach. Thanks for the pictures, it's made me much less concerned about wasting my time and money on this project. It all started when I wanted a much larger bucket for snow removal and had to resort to making my own.

You want the pins on a SSQA interface to lock tight with some travel left in the springs. With the double wedging design those springs on the pins keep tightening up the interface as the implement & loader flex or vibrate.

I've seen at least an inch on either side free in the pocket on several SSQA implements with no loss of stability. Most implements don't get a lot of side load, so I think pocket width is less relevant. If you get a lot of side loading, your loader will start wracking & twisting anyway.

Probably less expensive to fab up this than buy new. Way to go! Looks great with the JD green paint haha
