A year after my engine re-build on this '63 Ford 4000, it started surging the engine, and after many tries at finding the reason, the local tractor shop told me my governor was messed up. They pulled it down and found the weights are worn with flat spots, and so we've been trying to replace the governor assembly. The shop ordered the part and the inside hole diameter of the governor assembly that slides on the crankshaft past the splines is too big, too loose, too sloppy a fit. So he ordered another one, and it was the same. He has thrown up his hands, so I ordered one from my favorite parts catalog. It came in and is also too loose! The packaging is not the same style at all on the two products, so I believe they are different manufacturers. The mechanic is about 40 years or more into his career and is now the shop manager. He says, "Joe, I'm telling you my gut tells me not to put this loose thing on your tractor and button it up, cause I'm not confident it will work right after we do all the labor to put you back together." He showed me how nice a fit the old one is, compared to two of the new ones. Does anyone here have experience with this specific issue? Please advise. The old opening was 1.241 inches and the new one is 1.304, too loose. I do trust this mechanic. He's no kid and is well respected. I need to resolve this quick as possible! Thank you all!
