Oil & Fuel Governing Problem

I have a 4024 JD engine. When I start the engine it will rev. up for 15/20seconds before dropping to idle. also if throttle is set at a higher speed the engine will rev. up past this setting. If engine speed is set at 2800 revs. it will go past this to 3300 revs. This also occurs when engine goes under load. Is this a fuel pump /injector problem or a govenor problem. Is this a common problem with JD engines.

What unit is this engine in, or is it just a power unit? As far as the start up function of revving that is normal and is related to emissions, depending on the vintage of the engine. Once started and warmed up though that should not be happening. Early on in the stage of this engine there where specific issues w/ the fuel control system on these. A fairly technical process related to the fuel control system almost assured that you needed to take it to a dealer to get it taken care of.

Thank you for your reply, The engine is 2004 model and its symtoms get worse as the engine warms up. From starting fairly easy at the beginning of the week, it is now much more difficult to start.

2004 is the proper vintage for some unit that had some early on problems. The rack control system was technical enough that I probably won't be a lot of help. Make sure you take care of the easy stuff before sending to an experienced tech like fuel filters. An untrained individual messing with the rack on one of these could increase your problems a bunch. Sorry I was not more help maybe will get some more replies I know there are guys on here that are pretty good on common rail style fuel systems. Although the fuel delivery system is virtually the same on all of these 4024 the gov and some throttle controls could be different on a tractor/skid steer unit vs a power unit for something else.
