Grader design question

Hey Guys,

The implement company located above me has a grader attachment that looks similar to grademaster and other similar grader attachments. However, their blades are not angled but run straight across the grader. Will this make a difference? It is 6' and weighs 770lbs and it is well made. It is brand new and the last one they have and they are asking 700 or so for it.

The ones I have seen are angled some to divert dirt around, I would think that the straight ones would let most of it pile up? I will build one soon
do you have pictures or a link to the one your looking at?

No pictures of the design sorry. However, when I asked him why straight blades, he said because it would not let dirt or gravel build up at one end like the angled blades did. I have never used this kind of attachement and just wondered why he did it this way and if it would work as well as the angled.

I would also think angled blades would kinda squeegee the dirt around better?

Best of my knowledge, not fact, but i read that the angled blades are better for road work, where you may be crowning the middle, cutting the edge.

The straight bladed design more for cutting dirt to level, and maybe simple maintenance of existing gravel drive.

That's the best i can do, and I don't think there is a definitive answer, at least not one that is convincing enough for me to point to as FACT.


What i have seen and heard from the owners (and some of the guys here who have built them) is that they work very well.

As for the price, $700 seems pretty cheap for a 6 foot wide model, as compared with some of the prices out there.
A 6 footer will need approx. 30 HP minimum, based on the various manufacturer reccomendations.

RonMar built a nice Grader from scratch and had some good thoughts about it's design and use. Perhaps do a search fior his Grader thread.
He poste some before and after pics of his driveway, the "after" was pretty impressive.

here is what i did with a used blade that did a very good grading job.

not fast but very smooth and level

used it to grade an oval horse training track
