I am 16 and have grown up with a few hogs. We raised them indoors it a concrete pad out side. I have plans to get more this summer, but pasture raise them. After weaned inside. I have been trying to figure a way to make up a feeder for out side. I was thinking it may be possible to take an old grain drill of lime spreader, gut the drill parts and add a feed pan to the bottom to create a gravity creep feeder. I have been welding for awhile and prefer building things myself as long as they are not half @ssed. Has any one ever done this or seen it done. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions please let me know. Thanks,
hwstem :)

what shape is the grain drill or lime spreader in? Their worth alot of money to deer foodplotters that you could use to buy steel with. Just a thought.

How do you plan to keep the feed dry in the pan?

I don't own the drill or spreader yet. There are lots laying around near me. Possilble lids that the hogs push up with there noses. Or I could by a drill or spreader cheap recondition it. sell it put that money towards materials or a markerted one.

Some plywood, 2x4's, 2x6's and you could make one. Should be lots of plans available.:)

Thank you for the idea. I have seen a few woodplans. With the way hogs chew on things and the weather. I would rather go with metal. Thanks for everyones input. :)

I have seen mineral feeders made from old spreaders. I have a plan from progressive farmer here somewhere. The easiest way I think would be to use a large pvc pipe, cut in have length-wise as your trough. Then make an extended roof on top, attached to the hopper doors (to load feed). This would keep the feed dry and keep the roof high enough that it didn't interfere with the trailer toungue, so you can move the feeder easy. The pvc pipe (probably 6"), braced with metal, would be strong enough to withstand the hogs. I have hogs but have a round feeder that I picked up cheap.

Thank you for that information. I will look into that. We just got our hugs but decided to put them in the pen that we have always used. Still a possibility for chickens or sheep, but they d not eat as much as hogs do. For your hogs what kind of fencing do you use?
-Thanks

for tanks or a holder of the bulk feed, one could look into old hot water heaters, or to make troff out of, (talk to a plumber and he would most likely be happy to have you haul away a number of old hot water heaters,

even 55 gallon drums cut down, (use caution cutting any closed container, it is best to chisel or reciprocate saw the drums up or tops out, do not use a torch), (once open they are usually safe to use a torch on) but a closed container can explode I know many say I have been doing that for 50 years and never had a problem but if you do have a problem it may be the last problem you ever have),

I would look out in the machinery rows of old farms you may just spy some hog feeders that you could buy for nearly scrap price,

old combine tanks or bins, can make some feeders, or storage for feed,
