Grand L Differential Lock Operation

   / Grand L Differential Lock Operation #21
I have an L5740 and use the diff lock quite frequently in the woods. Throttle position should have no effect on its operation, since it's just a mechanical linkage. I engage it mostly when I'm moving, as long as the tires aren't already spinning. On rare occasion I think I have taken enough weight off the seat sensor, which will cause the engine to stall. This is likely your issue if you're on the lighter side. I'm not sure if turning the seat spring down (less tension) would help or not. You could try zip tying the seat sensor switch so it won't disengage and see if that solves your issue. I had to do this running a pto powered backhoe, since I couldn't get out of the seat with the pto engaged.
You should be able to lift up the seat to run the PTO. I dont remember if needing brakes engaged is part of that equation. I know that's not an option with an air ride seat like I have. Not clear if it's a ROPS only option or if cabbed machines with the standard seat can do it as well.

Thanks for the responses. I will be back at our property this weekend and hopefully will have some time to explore this further. I finally bought the tractor I have wanted for years back in August but have not been able to get much time on it. Right after I bought the tractor we started building a cabin. I did some bush hogging before we started this project. Now I jump on the tractor to move stuff are use my homemade man lift for high work.

I’m not overly concerned since I have a warranty. It seems odd that sometimes the differential lock seems to work fine and other times it seems finicky.

I wonder if the tractor stalls because you have taken weight off of the seat with all the pedal movement and the safety system is kicking in? The diff lock pedal has a strong spring, and takes a fair amount of force to keep it depressed. I changed my diff lock pedal spring out for one with less tension several years ago, works much better now. Philip.

Your post is spot on. I spent some time with the tractor today and realized I知 moving forward in the seat when I press the differential lock pedal which causes the stall. I only weigh about 160. My other tractor does not have operator presence safety feature so I am not used to this feature. Also my Mahindra has a actual pedal not just a round bar.

When I get few projects caught up I知 going to try a different spring like you suggested. I feel kind of dumb for not realizing it was operator error but I知 glad there is not a problem with a new tractor.

The spring in the referenced post is great. I went with the light one and it is working out better than I could have hoped. Put 8 hours on the tractor today and used the diff lock many times, use is much handier with the lighter spring.
