We moved here 3 years Octoborish. Top of a hill, in the forest. So, 99% of the grass we put down, the other 1% just good ol' nature and weeds.

After a few hunderded pounds of grass seed I think 31 fescue was the major bulk of the seed, and a few small bags of whatever and 20-30 bales of straw, no count 4-5 bales at a time here and there...some patching of bad dirt areas using compost, or old potting soil for repotted plants etc... The yard has really taken shape, no bad at all, there's a few areas lacking but, very pleased with the overall effect.

The Hillbilly lesson and a good one!

This fall the areas of concern will get some grass seed, not a lot and ZERO straw. The Iron Hill Shed became a place for the bull mastif to raise her pups for two months. I was a muddy trek from December thru March (or whatever the actual date). Along the way we tossed down a bale of old wet hay destined for the compost bin that we used as a walkway from the driveway to the shed. It's kinda cool that has become one of the best grassy areas in an otherwise barren of anything area! Way cool clover etc... So, guess whats going on the trouble spots? Just good ol' hay!!

Yes I learned that one too...straw decomposes very slowly. Grass has it's place.........in a pasture:laughing: I will have zero grass around the house we are building in the woods, it will be all gravel, & leaves. I despise cutting grass & weed whipping, which is odd because I am haying 45ac and enjoy it:confused:
Old hay makes fantastic mulch for the garden and a night crawler habitat for the fisherman.

Did you just toss the grass hay out and it took off on its own? Did you disk it in or cover it with soil?

Just laid it on the ground, er, tossed it down to be more exact. Then walked over it a 9 jillion times.....

In this area I didn't notice any weeds, which happens when using hay, but I can get rid of weeds easier and cheaper than I can grow grass!

Thanks to all with the nice comments about what's going on in my world right now too. In the past week I lost a friend of over 20 years and my nephew's wife to motorcycle accidents, my nephew is fighting for his life as I type.. I HATE MOTORCYCLES!

Only 9 jillion times?

I've done a lot of testing and suggest you keep walking on it some more for better results. Eleventy jillion seems to be the magic number.

Sorry to hear about your friends & family. I've been riding for 40+ years. If it gets into your blood, there is nothing else quite like it...that feeling of flight. It has risk attached to it and we have to decide whether the risk is worth the pleasure. We never know what is around life's next corner...nothing is risk free.
