You should be fine with rye grass if you can find it. The temps have dropped enough that it should work. I always wait until Halloween to plan mine. You can mix hulled bermuda with it and get it started. Then when the bermuda goes dormant, the rye will look great and you wont even notice in the spring when the bermuda starts up again while your rye is still nice looking, then when the rye dies off, the bermuda will have a good start.
You can do the same thing with centipede because it's so slow to get going. I've seen it take several years to take over an area. Around here, they plant all the seeds at once if you want a centipede lawn because it's such a slow process. I thought I would like centipede, but I really don't care for the shade of green it has, and then it is the first to go dormant months before bermuda. My bermuda will stay an amazing shade of green well into December!!! Then when it dies off, my rye grass is nice and thick and even nicer looking over winter.
