-- okay, so i've got 3 acres of land -- minus a 3/4 acre pond on it, and a house.

this spring, i prepped the lot and seeded it, using 24 25-lb. bags of trio seed (bluegrass, fescue and some creeping stuff) --

-- i also used scott's lawn starter fertilizer.

it is coming up quite well.

two days ago, i overseeded with 6 25-lb. bags, and yesterday, it rained 1.2 inches -- with NO runoff -- !!

my question -- would you re-seed in the fall again, with 12-bags of the stuff?

i don't want to fertilize again, since my dogs eat the grass, and i don't want them ingesting the stuff.

thanks!

eric

Fall is the best time to fertilize (promotes root growth). You can get some "organic" fertilizer - generally derived from chicken manure. I worry less about fertilizer than herbicides or pesticides with the animals. Still, keep the dogs off untill you get a good rain or two to get the fert into the ground.

Fall is also the best time to plant grass. If what you have planted is coming up, but is "thin" you should overseed. Rent the machine that makes little slits & ensures good soil contact (vs. spreading the seed & hoping for the best). They make tractor mounted ones, but generally speaking the rentals are "walk behind".

Good reference here - Cornell Lawn

Almost forgot

If you have a lesco nearby, they are "turf pros" and can give much better advice than the box stores. Also you can buy seed by the 50 or 100# bag usually for less than the Scotts stuff.

You may want to consider a soil test as well - helps pick the right fertilizer blend (lesco will have many) and lime etc.

I would see how the grass is doing in the fall, then think about overseeding.

As for dogs eating the fertiliser, I wouldnt worry about it too much as the fertiliser is not noramally dangerous to animals and they probably won't want to eat it anyway.

You could always try organic fertiliser (or animal manure!)

I wouldn't worry about the dog either. They like chewing on dry cow pies for the corn and they follow behind cats before it hits the ground.

Thanks for the Lesco link! I have been looking for a place that has bulk seed and fertilizers. I have been getting them at atwoods and TSC, but it is always so seasonal.
Thanks, Dave

Our dogs love to get 'granola bars' out of the cat litter box.
