I've looked at mowers and thought I decided on a Scag. After using a demo I was sold on the quality and cut from the scag, but I couldn't trim as close as I could with my old JD F525. I researched some more and found the Grasshopper front mount mowers. I am now wondering how the 700 series handles on hillsides, mowing crosswise. The Scag handled the hills fine. My F525 slides down the hill if it is wet, but it doesn't have the independent hydro wheels like the Grasshopper. Does anyone have feedback on the Grasshoppers? What rear wheel design are you using (narrow or wide)?
Thank you.

I know you asked about the Ft. mount units....
I have a MM 322D Grasshopper that huggs the hills like I never thought a mower could, I have gone up, down, sideways and even turn around on the inside and outside of one of my ponds.

It has the 24X12 turf tires.

There is always the DR Versa. Converts from a ZTR to a walk behind. Really.

Just noticed the re: Please Configure etc.

The Link was correct but it's possible my browser wasn't configured correctly. The correct tag should read:

DR Versa Mower

Sorry, fellas  (I tried hiding in the corners but the cursor keeps creeping out. )

The Grasshopper out front mowers really handle the hills nicely. I would suggest looking at the 722D2 unit with the diesel engine. These mowers really hold their own. Good Luck.

Why don't you go all out and consider a JD 1400 or 1500 mower??? I like the Grasshopper but have frequently dreamed of one of the JD front cuts.

I have a D928 with the 61" PowerFold deck. I looked at JD's front
mounts, but their price was a lot! higher.

I have some hefty slopes where the property drops down to the
drainage area and back up to the street.

I have the twin-wheel tail-wheels (two wheels per side) and
negotiating slopes has never been a problem (wet or dry).

I REALLY like the front mounted deck; fold it upwards and
you can easily clean under the deck; change blades; and so forth.

A really nice feature of Grasshopper's front mounts is the
ability to use different implements on the front.

At this time, the deck is stored away and the rotary broom is
mounted. I used to use the JD 4115 FEL which I later traded in for
a 3520 w/ FEL.

My son has to pull his car out of the garage so we can get the grasshopper
out. By the time he's backed out; wait for the Grasshopper to get out;
and then pull back it - the 67' driveway portion is almost done -
the first pass on one side is completed and I've almost completed doing
the second pass (on the other side of the driveway). AND snow
is cleared away to the pavement - unlike using the FEL.

My youngest managed a LCO and he 'ragged' about how he didn't like
the Grasshopper's rear sticky out so far - compared to a SCAG ZTR.
But after using the Grasshopper this season; seeing how handy the
fold-up deck is; and how quickly and cleanly it clears snow -
he told me I made a darn good decision buying the Grasshopper.

I wish the Grasshopper diesel was a YANMAR direct injection vs.
KUBOTA's indirect injection diesel. But, it's runs great and starts
even when it's colder than....

Now, the 3520 sits in the garage waiting for the BIG snow to
hit or the really wet/heavy stuff to fall; otherwise, it's a job
for the Grasshopper.

And I'm definitely a JD man! But, the Grasshopper is awfully
handy.

Merry Christmas,

Lon

Lon,
Thanks for the feedback. I'll probably opt for a GH 700 series in the spring, unless they have a big price increase. They sound like the best choice for my use. I do like the raised deck feature too. I'll probably stick with the gas models though since I would never recoup the cost difference of the diesels with the hours I'll put on it.

I mowed with a front deck grasshopper for some time before getting a finish mower for my tractor. I have a long, steep levy on my pond and it worked very well. It only had 1 tail wheel but held the hill with no problems. The Grasshoppers are built like a tank and the cut quality was very good. Wish I had it back!
