Sorry to interrupt the thread but why did they ban the dredging?
Steve

They claimed that the dredging clouded the water too much ruining fish habitat.

Not to mention that the occasional clam barge would knock out a span on the Causeway bridge killing drivers.

What I see in the pics is flat sand and no crown or ditches for water to run off and away. Water is the enemy, and getting a good roadbed that stays dry is most important.
Rain that will run off and away will not stay around to "float" your sand or let your tires drop in and cause ruts.
What I would recommend would be taking care of the water drainage first. Then put down a gravel, textile, or re-processed cap on the dry roadbed.
Just my thoughts having dealt with similar circumstances in the sand country of central WI. :)

I think it's worth saying twice, get the water away. I think the drive lane looks pretty level. I have lived with a steep drive for 30+ yrs. No one was ever able to stop the washing out over the years. A couple yrs ago I had drive done and the folks who did it placed a couple crossover pipes for the water to naturally flow. I and everyone of my "expert" driveway folks before this were stuck on ditching both sides. However it never worked for long.

Your thoughts of getting the water away might be more important on flat land. In any event get the water away is probably the best place to start.

Cheers....Coffeeman

I'd suggest starting with 4" of "road base", then top it off with 4" or whatever the county recommends. (around here "road rock" is called AB3 by the quarry - which specifies how much aggregate above 1" and below 3/4" and what percentage "finings" per ton)
