Use your box blade to skim the grass and weeds off the top layer so you have a clean base. Get a few loads of 3/4" crusher run and spread it. Ends up packing down like concrete after a while but is easy to blade up and regrade.

Just rehab'ed my cousins driveway this week on the house they just bought. Washed out down to large base stones with ruts and was at least 4-5 inches below the lawn on either side. Had a tri-axle load of crusher run trucked in and I spread it with the box blade. Now its level with the lawn. Once this first layer settles and packs down going to have another load brought in for a top layer with crown and to add a few inches to the parking area.

Hi All,

My house has a circular gravel driveway that has not been maintained in many years, that I want to fix up. There is plenty of base stone there, but the grass/soil has overtaken the area. (see pictures below) My plan is to kill the grass with herbicide, grade it all out with a box blade, then spread four inches of new gravel on top. I'm planning on using either a clean coarse stone (57's or 67's) or crusher run gravel. I'm leaning towards the clean stone to avoid the dogs tracking dust/mud into the house.

Does this sound like an OK plan? Do I need to add some geo-textile fabric or gravel stabilizer grids to prevent the stone from sinking into the dirt or shifting around? I don't mind periodically regrading when required, as I have the tractor/box blade to do it with.

Obviously I could use several layers of progressive smaller stone starting at 4", but I'm not interested in spending $10,000 on my rural driveway. As it is, the one layer of gravel will probably cost me $3k. The total area is around 4,000 square feet BTW.

Thanks!

I'll agree with the others saying it looks pretty good as is.
Looking at the pictures it brought back memories of driving to the city and seeing all the houses with the two strips of concrete for driveways with grass in between the concrete strips.
If it gets soft and bothers, then I'd be tempted to dig it down about 4 inches put down a heavy highway fabric and the build it up 6 inches with a good compacting fine gravel or crusher run material.
