k9kent: Thank you for the article. It was appropriate for my needs. Living in N.E. with our 3 annual seasons: Winter, Mud, and Summer makes driveway maintenance challenging. I will keep my fingers crossed until everything dries out (May/June) and hope that "she who must be obeyed" does not get stuck in the mud with her Subaru. I did talk to a contractor yesterday. He walked/slogged up the "driveway" as he did not want to get his SUV dirty. After 20+ years of my "upkeep" I think I will bite the bullet, get some heavy equipment to move 1-1.5' base, and use geotextile fabric before I lay rock and stone. Jay

Ray, Mike, & Mike: Thank you for your responses. I will probably go with a contractor for the heavy equipment (and remove some "widow maker" trees), and use my tractor to "use" the ~4000 cubic feet of base that will be removed. Jay
