What痴 every recommendation on gravel sub-base & base materials of a south eastern gravel road. Not a short driveway. I was thinking after the roadbed is rough graded add 4-6 of like railroad ballast rock grade that out, pack & add 3-4 of crush & run or a cleaned 1-2 size stone for the final top layer. Would this be proper for a long lasting gravel road? Not a lot of snow just rains a lot at times here. Thanks

How long is the road going to be ? Is this a new road or existing ? Is it mostly flat or does it have hills or curves ? How is the road going to be drained...meaning is it crowned in the middle with water going to the sides then drained away with ditches. Do you have any culverts to get water to drain from one side to the other ? Don't hastily grade the road and then put stone base down. Get it to where it needs to be...you only get one chance to grade it right the first time....otherwise it gets expensive to tear it up and redo. Maybe a few pictures would help us ....

Look for answers on building a new road & if I was to recondition a old road. No real curves in the one I’m looking to redo though also no crown as it is and don’t plan on adding it, just sloping. Looking for an answer on the correct sub base and base and final layer as far as what rock to use on each layer and how deep each layer needs to be.

To recondition an old road, I think your material selection will work without the rail ballast providing the road is fully compacted. The amount will be dictated as you spread it. I’m assuming it will be tail dumped off a truck.

On a new construction, rail ballast would come into play.
