i just bought a Gravely 812 yesterday, the PTO shaft was disconnected.brought it home, hooked the shaft up,started the tractor and the PTO was already engaged.it won't disengage.i don't know anything about the Gravely riding tractors, this is the first one i have had.very impressed with how it is built.nice solid machine.does anyone know or have had this problem with theirs ?????

If the PTO lever is too far out of adjustment it won't disengage.

Since the PTO control was disconnected. that means that the PTO clutch sat engaged for GAK how long. Mow the grass with the PTO "OFF" and it should eventually break loose.

i fiddled with the lever at the trans, the control lever was still attached, but it still wouldn't disengage.i will disconnect the control lever and see if i can get it to disengage that way.if it still won't,i guess i will be searching for a service manual for it.

Here is a manual for the 812.

http://oldgravelys.net/pdf/800_8000_Shop_Man_0779.pdf

The clutch lever coming out of the transmission has to go to the rear, towards the engine, to release the clutch. when it is pulled back and held there it compresses the clutch spring allowing the cups and gear to spin free, the clutch is released or in neutral. On my 814 "PTO OUT" on the shifter plate is forward, when in that position it is pushing the linkage rearward so if the linkage adjustment is too short it won't pull the clutch lever back enough to compress the spring and release the clutch. If the linkage is too long it will not release the spring enough to allow the clutch parts to squeeze together and it will make your clutch slip.

So connect the linkage to the lever on the transmission and the shifter. adjust it like the manual says, you need to compress the inner spring, and run it like RichardTX says and it should free up.

Good luck.
