Gravely Super Convertible comes out of gear

I have a 72 or so Super Convertible. After running about a 30 to 45 minutes and getting hot the Tractor will slip or come out of gear, usually the high range. I usually shift into low and can continue but slower.
Ideas as to what the issue may be?

I'm bettiing that it has the 2-speed axle and the Clutch Housing on the Worm Gear is worn or the Sliding Clutch is worn. Or Both.

Fladon, You are correct it is a two speed axle. Is there a website with some info on the fix and is it a difficult repair? I did not see much here. Thanks for the reply.

Replace the dot with a . Under the manuals you will find the manuals for the Ls and Cs. The job isn't that hard, but neither is it a cheap fix to do if you want it to be long term. You pull off the right axle housing after draining the oil out of the tranny/engine combo. Drain bolt is the bottom one on the left side axle housing where the housing is held to the tranny case. With the engine and tranny supported, you then pull the left axle and housing if the ears on the Clutch Housing are rounded. The diff section will drop down in the tranny and come out the right side. There are 6 bolts that hold the Clutch Housing to the Diff. The Clutch Housing also has a taper roller bearing that has to come off. To do a cheap and dirty repair, you grind the ears so they are perpendicular to the bottom, back to the point where there is only a little curve at the outer end. That means 3 to 6 edges need ground or filed. To do a long term repair, you replace the Clutch Housing and Sliding Clutch. The Sliding Clutch is steel whereas the Clutch Housing is Cast Iron so the wear takes place there.

Guess I have a decision, continue to use as is, do the 'dirty' repair, or do it right. May live with it for now. I use the tractor only a couple of times a year to mow some area in my back yard. Don't till with it anymore.
