Maybe a ring problem.
Plugs look like?
Compression check?

Just serviced, new fuel filter.

Since you just changed your fuel filter just before your symptoms started you might check your carb for debris. Sometimes easy to get debris in a jet/float when changing a fuel filter. Symptoms can mimic your smoke and spitting out of raw fuel.

I can replace the plug, but that's about the extent of my mechanical ability.

Any chance that a small amount of diesel got mixes with your gas?

Thanks. Will do. I'm sure liking that as a possible fix versus some of the other, more expensive sounding options.

Hi Coxster, you probly have your fuel issue figured out by now,but it sounds like you have somethin under your float needle that holding it open allowing to much uel into the bowl on your carb. When you shut the mower down after mowing always shut your gas valve off. if you dont the fuel in your tank will fill your cylinder with gas.If this happens your dipstick could show your engine is overfull of oil (which is caused by your gas running into the crankcase) and that is not good.Change your oil before starting your engine. If you shut your gas off you still can get a small amount gas in your engine through the float needle valve if its got something that keeps it from seating which will give you the white smoke and raw fuel coming out of your muffler when you start up. I hope this helps you, crazymower

Thanks for the response. As it turned out, as I think I understand it, pretty much what you described was the problem. Got it fixed and all was well...until yesterday. I swear this mower is possessed. Cranked it up, started to mow, engaged the blades and it cut off. Would not even make a noise. Manuevered it back to the garage with a hand truck, talking real ugly about it the whole time. 2 hours later, I was telling my boys about it, one of them jumped on it and it started right up. I couldn't talk him into mowing while he had it running. I'll try it again one day this week, but don't feel real good about it! Maybe I'm the problem.

Thanks again for the response.

Probably a safety switch of some type is failing. When it happens again check bypass the seat safety (for troubleshooting). Still happens check the PTO saftey. Keep checking them till you have found all the safety switches.
