I am looking to get some input on pasture seed. I plan on chisel plowing a field this coming spring that has been used for grazing for the past 4 years and is very tired and needs to be renovated. I need a seed or mix that will work for my climate (new england) and will also be fast growing (for intensive grazing situations), this field will be used for grazing dairy cattle. any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

-thanks chris

It would be a good idea to check with your local Ag extension office, or Soil/water Conservation Dept. Things vary so much by region that something that works well one place wouldn’t work at all at another. The local feed/seed store could probably help too since they know what people are planting. I think I remember that orchard grass doesn’t do well as a stand alone forage because it can’t take the grazing pressure, but I may be mistaken.

that does makes sense that orchard grass doesn't do well with intensive grazing and I will call and see what they have to say, I was just wondering if any types stood out more than others in new england.

-thanks chris
