I was greasing my loader and when I pulled the grease gun out, the grease fitting came out with it. I tried to screw it back in but would not go. I contacted the NH dealer and they replaced the pin no questions asked. That was great. When I picked up the new pin, it had no threads for the grease fitting. I was told that they use press fit grease fittings. This is new to me. Why would you use a press fit grease fitting? Do they hold up just as well? Just seamed odd to me.
What do you all think?
Thanks

Scott, I can't really answer as to why pressed in fittings are used, but they're not unusual. I'd speculate that they're used because it's faster and cheaper to build equipment that way. I've pulled out pressed in fittings just as you did, especially on both riding mowers I've owned.

There are many pieces of equipment that use press-in grease fittings. I for one, don't like them, but I am sure that they use them because of the bean counters. It costs less if you don't have to thread the hole.

If the hole is small enough, you could tap it, and use a threaded zerk... If not, a little loctite sleeve retainer might hold it in better..

I for one and getting frustrated with the constant degradation of quality do to "bean counting". I'd prefer to pay a little more and have the better quality.

Danny,
The problem is, everyone is constantly looking for the cheapest price on a product. The more they can cut back costs and achieve the "same" product, thats what they do. If they can cut the cost of maunfacturing a tractor by $100, thats how they make it more attractive to the buyer. I know I'm guilty of price shopping too, and if one brand has about the same tractor as another brand, one is cheaper, thats what I probably would buy. It's AFTER the fact that you realize it was cheaper due to the cost cutting measures that took place.

Visit your local hardware store, Lowes or Home Depot and purchase a self taping - tapered zerk. Screw in and your problem will be solved. Be sure and obtain the tapered self taping zerk.

I bought a King Kutter Rotary last spring. Not only did they use pressed grease fittings, they used a different size on the tail wheel. It was half the size of a normal zirc fitting.

Have you ever been working on a GM Ford Chrysler product and found a mix of metric and standard bolts under the hood?
