I just put 10 hours on my GT2542 and did the first round of grease maint. a long with changing the hydro oil filter.

When I was trying to pull the end of the grease gun hose off the grease fittings. It was very hard to get the end of the grease gun to release from the nipple. Then one of the nipples came out of the hole it was mounted in. Luckily I was able to take a pair of pliers and put some cloth around the nipple or grease fitting and get it back out of the hose on the grease gun. I then took a rubber mallet and a piece of 2x4 and tap the fitting back in the hole to re-seat it.

I would have thought these fittings would have been tap and screwed in?? Seems cheesy to me? Anyone else have this problem and will the new grease gun get easier to remove once it breaks in and wears some. I had to twist and pull to get the hose off each nipple or grease fitting.

Also is there anyway to remove the headlight lens to clean some of the dust that gets trapped in there out? Thanks guys, The PMZ

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, this has happened to a lot of folks and yes, some of us think it is a pretty cheap or "cheesy" thing to do on a supposedly good product. I'm lucky (well, maybe) because my grease gun is so worn I have to hold the business end on the fitting and pump with the other hand. I was all set to replace the end on my grease gun until I read about the grease fittings coming off our Cubs.

Can't help you with the headlight lens, I've never bothered with it because the headlights are so dim on my 2542 that I disconnected them so that the battery charges as much as it can. Why have the headlights drawing juice when they're next to useless? It would be nice to be able to clean in there though.

You can always replace the cheap fittings with good screw in type grease fitting.I have been using my 2180 with 18 hp vanguard, for three years of commerical mowing.I grease everthing everyday with the cheap stuff!I have had one come off, that was enough for me.If your worried about dust getting in the head lights, after cleaning try to seal the lens part to keep dust out.

PMZ, the zerks are a pain...The headlight cover will come off. If you look closely, there are tabs on the cover that fit into slots on the assembly. Mine just pops out with some careful coaxing.

Lots of posts on the zerks since most everyone has trouble with them. I've replaced some with thread in types and others with new press in types.

The press in types are available at auto parts or farm type stores. Not hard to find at all. And once you press them in properly they seem to stay.
