I am getting ready to order my JD4720. One of the accessories` I wanted to get is a grease gun. But I know nothing about grease guns.

So please educate me:

What is the best quality grease gun which is also easy to use?
Where can I get the grease gun you recommend for the best price?

Thank you for sharing your insights.

Recently in the Oil, Fuel, and Lubricants section, there was a very good thread about grease gun purchases. Here is a link to the thread if you care to take a look: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/oil-fuel-lubricants/145115-grease-gun.html

Here is a copy of the post I made in that thread:

Last year I bought a pistol type grease gun from Advance Auto on wim. It turned out to be a piece of crap because it was always loosing it's prime and I would have to unscrew the grease canister to get it to prime again. Never had this problem with my NAPA lever grease gun. A few weeks ago I bought a Lincoln 1134 off Amazon for $31 w/ free shipping. Took about a week to get here and they still have them for that price if your interested. I could tell right away when I was using the Lincoln that it is a much, much better built gun and so far I have been very pleased with it.

If the 4720 is anything like the 4320 I own (and I think it is) there are very few grease fittings on the tractor. Mine is only a little more than a year old but all the grease fittings I've found is on the 3ph. However, you'll need to grease lots of other accessories and equipment -- especially front end loader and backhoe.
I know from experience that Craftsman (Sears) and Lincoln both have very good grease guns. Prices on ebay are usually pretty good.
You might consider a cordless battery operated gun. My youngest gave me one for Christmas last year and I only wish I had it years ago.

Your dealer sells some JD branded ones also that are very good IMHO. I have the pistol grip style and love it.

In my opinion, pistol grip Lincoln 1134. As stated above the link is good information. It helped steer me to the Lincoln.

If you have or will get a trailer - on which you will use this "Dream" grease gun.
I suggest that you DO NOT get a high pressure one that can put out a lot of volume quickly.
i.e. do not buy on specs, in particular do not select the gun that puts out the most volume at the highest pressure.

It is one of my beliefs that a "regular" el cheapo discount store grease gun cannot put out enough pressure and volume to blow the seals out of trailer wheel bearings.
On the other hand a compressed air powered gun can pump grease into E-Z lube axles faster than it can flow through the bearings and out the front - so it blows out the back seal and "finds" the brakes.
For the various fittings on the loader a swivel grease connector can sometimes be the ONLY way to get at those.
PTO shaft grease fittings are another thing that can be awkward with only a straight on connector.

IMO, YMMV, etc.

I went with a pistol grip John Deere one and a case of their "general" all around good grease. I would need to go grab a tube to get the type.
