I always try to make it a practice to keep my mower deck clean and keep blades sharp. I gave my baby a good cleaning and sharpened blades. I also had to replace the PTO belt today.
I mowed 2 days ago and wasn't pleased with the cut this time around (grass was still a little wet and long). I went over it again tonight boy what a difference.
I can't stress enough that having a clean deck and sharp blades really has it's benefits. I hope all of you enjoy your Cubs as much as i do.:D

I religiously put my tractor up on ramps and clean under the deck every 2 mowing sessions using dull scraper and compressed air. It is not just spinning blades that cut the grass, it is the vacuum the deck creates to lift the grass up before it's cut that is part of the job too. If there is a lot of buildup underneath the deck, the vacuum diminishes. This is also why heavier wet grass does not cut so well.

I used to enjoy motorcycles a lot, but now like the tractors more. I can get more enjoyment out of a $300 fixer-upper Cub Cadet than a $50,000 Orange County Chopper could bring me.

I knock off all I can from under the deck after each use, but clumped up or not, my 44" gives me a clean reliable cut every time. Second season, approaching 60hrs and I've yet to touch the blades.

Great points on the benefits of cleaning the deck. Important to use the scraper and get the lip all the way around the deck. Grass will accumulate there and mess the airflow up.

I also make sure whether bagging or discharging to keep the chute area clear. Even a little accumulated grass will affect the airflow. Lastly, make sure the spindle area is clear, if you have the 42" deck as I do, it is designed to get the air from the top.

I think the 44 inch deck does a fine job. My yard is made up of many different types of grasses and weeds. When I mow it looks great! My yard is just to big to worry about treating all the "stuff" the grows.
We built a new home in 2004 and this spring we finally got the grass planted. The new grass was doing great until the crab grass took over. I will most likely do something about it this fall or next spring.:)
