The spring has been good to veggie gardens in central Alabama

Nice looking plants and a great irrigation source you have there:thumbsup:

Weather has not been kind in western NC. Very wet and unseasonable cool/cold. We had frost the second week of May. Last year I planted around mid April with no problems. We are about 4 weeks behind on growth but should catch up now that it is in the low to mid 80's. Lots of people lost plants and buying their second round. Good for the greenhouse business.

Update on the maters I have growing at the farmland I hunt

This hunting area is call "Mandy Hollow" so I refer to these as my Mandy Hollow Maters. I had lots of extra plants in the greenhouse, knew this soil was rich, devised a way to support them with cattle panels, and they are enjoying the environment so far. Who knows if the wildlife will let them get to harvest, but the process is fun

It looks like your Mandy Hollow tomatoes are at the explosive growth stage. It always seems like they creep up to 18" and then, BOOM! Up they go. Mine are ready to start ripening, but they have had some watering stress with dry spells and then heavy rains. I've had about 20 tomatoes in various stages of growth with blossom end rot. I felt around most of the tomatoes and they are firm and well-shaped on the bottom. I think this is not going to be a long-term problem. It is becoming very hot with temperatures in the upper 90s and maybe a couple of excursions to 100+ over the next week. I ordered some 40% shade cloth today to put over my trellis nets. I'll put it over in the afternoon and roll it off in the morning when they need light. I'll use bamboo poles like fishing poles to roll it up on. The searing heat is just too much for tomatoes. Hopefully, my indeterminate tomatoes will keep setting fruit if I shade them. I'm going to shade my bean plants too, but with a different method.

With my home tomatoes I have had the Blossom End Rot problems as well, mainly with plants in big pots, and with heirloom. I agree that it is just a passing issue. Would like to see a picture of your shading process. I agree with you on the hot temps and maters don't get along.

I could use some growing weather here too. High today was 59F with rain and a NW breeze. Tomorrow will be a repeat. Lows in the mid-40's. Our 90 day growing season is a real problem with a late start.

Spring came early but summer is hiding out somewhere.
