Alright, yes, I'm new to heavy equipment ownership.
I've a 1990 Ford 655C bachoe/loader.
A stick found its way up under the carriage and broke out the transmission cooling filter and took the threads along with it from the filter assembly.
So yes... I bought a new one and am installing it.
I have a service manual covering the 455C/555C and 655C. Over 1000 pages of info photo copied into a few .pdf files very difficult to search and find info in.
I cannot find anywhere in the manual where it specifies the particular fluid that goes into the transmission.

So the question is... What sort of fluid goes into the transmission? Iknow it isn't standard automotive ATF. Is it THF or something else? Where is it poured into the system? Is it the cap down on the floor in front of the seat?
Yeah... I know... greenhorn questions.
Also... I'm out here in Hawaii in the middle of no-where and we don't have huge selections of brands or grades so the most basic fluid acceptable is all I can work with here.
Thanks for any help in advance.
Mike

Welcome Mike! Sorry I can't help you.

You might have better luck posting this in the Related Equipment : Construction Equipment section.

I would call a Ford dealer .. My guess is if it has a common gearbox/hydraulic sump it uses UTF fluid. Universal Tractor Fluid. Usually Fords call for 134A fluid or something like that, do not quote me. Most UTF's cover Ford 134A spec if that is the spec. Again I am not sure of that spec #.

Try looking up Builder under users and send him a private message. He runs BH's for a living. Builder is his screen name.

I just looked it up because it did not sound right to me either. Its Ford 134 fluid. Is very close to 134A but I guess you would have to be a real idiot to fill your tractors sump with Freon.

Anyway Ford 134 spec is covered by almost every UTF fluid I have seen. I think they are now on Version 134D.

Yeah--- I know it is different.. But can you hear this:

Guy walks into Ford dealership-- Hey I need some 134 fluid..
parts clerk- 134 coolant or 134 tranny oil?

just think the coincidence of the number is almost too funny!

Mahalo Gents for the info.
It looks like I'll be heading into the New Holland dealership/parts place in Hilo tommorow anyhow.
I put a new correct sized battery and new cables into the the thing today because the previous moron had a 550 CCA automotive battery in it and I didn't want the starter to get fried out from being under powered... sure enough the starter is already nearly totally fried. So now I'm off to buy a new starter etc in the AM.
I really hate morons who don't or won't take the time or money to do things right. They wanna save $100 on a battery to fry out a few hundred dollar starter assembly it's like the guy who uses a weed whacker cord to power a 20 amp table saw.
Anyhow... I'll get the correct fluid in town. Out here we only have an autoparts place with Chevron THF which will probably be fine when I need fluid for my hydraulics system but it sounds as if the transmission needs another type of fluid.

That Chevron THF would be fine.

I have a 555C and it takes 134 fluid throughout. Makes it simple.

Just looked in the book and yours calls for the same, to be precise, it calls for

M2C 134-C or Ford M2C 159-A?B (10W30 only)

So if you look at the specs on the side of a generic TDH oil, it will have the 134 # and usually D, the cheaper one here is still C, which either of those would be acceptable to use.

I imagine the fill port is right by your right foot. If I remember right there are two right there.

If you have the rubber matting there will be little plugs or knockouts over the dipstic and fill tube.

I can ask my dad, or look in Cosco there and see if they carry a TDH fluid (sam's does here) and that is probably what I would use.

Just being nosy, but where are you. My dad is in Lahuei I think it is. Man, I cannot even remember the name of the island now.

How are you determining the starter to be "almost" fried? I would hate to see the tab on that starter.

I am guessing you have the e-bay manual, which I also have, I printed mine which makes it a bit nicer to look for stuff.

I bought the Operators manual off E-bay for about $10 and it makes finding that kind of info and servicing info easy. Mine also covers the 655C

Have fun, as mentioned the construction equipment forum would get you more responses, and I do have all the books on your machine so you can PM me if needed or I can call you on the way home from work (it is free) If I can help.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted out.

Oh, my other reccomendation is check out Filter1 Wix heavy duty engine, oil, automotive, truck, and tractor filers.

When you start buying those filters to get your maintenance caught up, it can make you cry, and hope like heck you don't need a power steering pump (I do) and new they are almost $1000. Seems ludicrous to me although I found some cheaper aftermarket ones.

Wal Mart will have a fluid that will work in your tractor...it's Super Tech and is the same one sold at Sam's Club with a different label...if I recall correctly it's 134C or D. I know there's a Wal Mart near...last year the Wife and I flew from Virginia to San Diego, CA...jumped on a cruise ship (much better than jumping off) and sailed to 5 of the Hawaiian Islands...so, after 4,500 miles of travel and first port of call we get off the boat and there's a chartered bus to take passenger's to the local Wal Mart...my wife was ecstatic. It was the first place we visited in Hawaii. I wanted to go to the Mauna Kea Obsevatory or take a helicopter tour...but no, Wally World.

Just shows you how the right hand and left hand do not work togheter. Some guy designing tractors calls the new oil 134 at the same time the guy working on AC systems does the same.
