Grinding noise after starting

Friend has a TYM 233HST.

Been parked for a month or more. Now when it starts there's a nasty noise like trying to shove a stick shift into gear with the clutch engaged. The reverse pedal hops up & down when it does it. Did not do this when parked.

I think reverse, far right pedal? Only saw it for a second as it is the kind of noise that makes you hit the off ASAP.

Any thoughts?

How many hours? If it has the old drive shaft I would check that first.

Less than 200 hours

Driveshaft is original? What's "old driveshaft" mean?

I think Bud Soda is referring to a drive shaft that has a lot of hours on it and worn out bearings and u joints.

You mentioned the reverse pedal. Could it be sticking and not fully retracting? This may leave the gears in slight contact causing your noise.

My OEM driveshaft went way more that 200 hours but you would be better off to change it now before a $200 repair turns into a $ 1500 repair. Have you tried to run the tractor again? I guess it's real cold where you are? That could be a problem with HST.

HST tractors have a clutch too. You may have a busted spring in the clutch plate itself.

I realize HST do have a clutch but the way the OP described in the first sentence just didn't make sense to me.

Would it be possible that the reverse foot pedal needs adjustment and is creeping causing the shifting issue?

He is not actually trying to stuff it into gear without the clutch, only that it sounds like it.

I could well be the HST pedal needs adjusting, but I am more inclined to look at the clutch itself. NOT that I would split the tractor without a more informed opinion. I wouldn't hesitate to take off an inspection cover and take a peek at it. Make sure the decompression lever is in the off position before turning the engine over by hand.

The noise is like trying to shove it in gear.
I heard it only once for a second before he shut it off. It's not a sound you want to listen to for long.

I'll see if there's more info to be had, but pretty much it's a low hour machine that worked when parked. And now this.

Also has some kind of link broken in PTO, something snapped when his auger hit a rock and sucked itself down. That was 6 months ago, can't think of any reason that would be related but who knows?

I have zero knowledge of these little tractors, so I'm no help.
