Grubbing Tongs

My appreciation to all who posted info on the Tongs. I finally figured out they are the answer to one of my problems. We can all use something to save time and make those jobs easier!!

Greg H - Have you purchased them yet? They are extremely useful - had I known how much so, I'd have gotten them a lot sooner.

One enhancement I made to mine that you might find useful (you know I can't leave anything alone): I took a shackle, and put a pulley on the shaft. My friend with the metal lathe made a couple spacers to keep it centered, and welded a plate across the throat to keep the cable on the tongs in the groove in the pulley. With it, the cable has a nice round surface to pull against and the chain hook can pull against the shackle. I think the cable will last longer that way and it's a little easier handle the chain hookup, too.

Mark I am ordering the Tongs today. Sounds as if your improvements to it are worth while. After i have some playtime with them I may try the same thing. Thanks for the info. Do you own anything that you havent modified??

GregH - Have you gotten the tongs yet? Just curious what you think of them.

BTW, I do have a '96 VW Passat diesel that's pretty much unmodified, except for a CB and scanner. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I have a trick with tongs that I would like to run past the safety minded group here. It is for overcoming the tendency they have for jumping off of logs you are trying to drag lengthwise before a bite can be achieved. Got the picture?

Saturday I knocked down a 9-12 inch stinkweed and tried to drag it back into the parking lot. It took a number of attempts to get the tongs to attach before the upward or even the horizontal pull jerked them off. It takes a lot of time to go back n forth (and I have a cab) /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif. Cords would seem to be a solution /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

How about using a couple of bunge cords or similar to wrap around the log/tree to hold the tongs on until you can pull hard enough to dig the points in?

Jim - For stuff like that, I use a choker chain. I've had the same problem you had with skidding tongs.

By the way, the grubbing tongs are totally different from skidding tongs.
